Penguins Split Doubleheader, Earn Series Win Over Purdue Fort Wayne

The Youngstown State baseball team earned the Horizon League series win by splitting a doubleheader against Purdue Fort Wayne on Sunday at Defiance High School in Defiance, Ohio.

The Penguins fell 8-7 in game one before bouncing back with a 12-6 victory in game two. YSU also won the series opener on Friday by a final of 4-0.

Friday's series opener was played at Mastodon Field in Fort Wayne, Ind. However, heavy rainfall and poor field conditions resulted in Sunday's doubleheader being moved to Defiance High School in Defiance, Ohio.

Youngstown State is now 8-11 overall and 2-1 in Horizon League play while Purdue Fort Wayne is 2-17 overall and 1-2 in league action.

Game 1 Recap

Ben Higgins hit a two-out, walk-off infield single to second base to give Purdue Fort Wayne an 8-7 victory over the Youngstown State baseball team in game one of Sunday's doubleheader at Defiance High School.

In the home half of the ninth, Dylan Stewart drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a groundout and scored on the two-out infield single to second base by Higgins to give Purdue Fort Wayne the walk-off victory.

The Mastodons jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the Penguins scored the next four runs to take a one-run lead. Purdue Fort Wayne scored four runs in the eighth to take a 7-4 edge before YSU evened the score at 7-7 with three runs in the top of the ninth.

Andre Good went 2-for-5 with two home runs and three RBIs while Lucas Nasonti was 2-for-5 with a double, three RBIs and a run scored. Good hit two homers in a game for the second time in his career. The last time a Penguin hit two home runs in a contest was when Good hit two in his collegiate debut at Houston on Feb. 16, 2020. Seth Lucero and Dylan Swarmer added two hits apiece while Padraig O'Shaughnessy drew three walks and drove in a run.

The Mastodons jumped ahead early with three runs on two hits and an error in the bottom of the first inning. Alex Evenson reached on a one-out error and advanced to third on a double by Higgins. Braedon Blackford followed with a sacrifice fly to center field that plated Evenson for the first run of the game. Cade Fitzpatrick followed with a two-out, two-run home run to left field to give Purdue Fort Wayne a 3-0 lead.

The Penguins pulled within a run by scoring two runs on four hits in the top of the fifth inning. Good led off the inning with a solo home run to right center field to get YSU on the board. Lucero hit a two-out single and scored on an RBI double to left center by Nasonti to cut Purdue Fort Wayne's lead to 3-2.

Youngstown State grabbed the lead with two runs on two hits in the top of the eighth inning. Steven D'Eusanio reached on a two-out infield single, and Good followed with his second home run of the game to give the Penguins a 4-3 edge.

Purdue Fort Wayne responded by scoring four runs on five hits in the home half of the eighth to regain the lead. Jarrett Bickel led off the frame with a solo home run to even the score at 4-4. Later in the inning, Fitzpatrick hit the go-ahead RBI single before Garrett Maish delivered a pinch-hit, two-run single to give the Mastodons a 7-4 advantage.

YSU answered by scoring three runs on two hits in the top of the ninth to even the score at 7-7. Ian Francis was hit by a pitch to begin the inning, and Lucero followed with double to put runners at second and third. Nasonti then delivered a two-run single up the middle to make it a one-run game. After back-to-back walks to Dominick Bucko and Braeden O'Shaughnessy, Padraig O'Shaughnessy drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 7-7.

YSU starter Travis Perry allowed three unearned runs on four hits and fanned four batters over five innings of work. After giving up three runs in the bottom of the first inning, Perry settled in to work four straight scoreless innings before giving way to Chad Coles in the sixth.

Coles retired the first six batters he faced before allowing the game-tying home run to Bickel in the bottom of the eighth. Coles was responsible for three runs on three hits while striking out three batters over two innings of relief. Casey Marshalwitz suffered the loss after allowing two runs on two hits in 1.1 innings. Kenny Misik retired the only batter he faced in the eighth while Alex Cardona surrendered the walk-off single in the ninth.

Purdue Fort Wayne starter Mitchell Spencer allowed two runs on five hits and recorded five strikeouts over five innings. Kevin Fee permitted two runs on two hits and fanned four batters over two innings of relief. Kyle Maurer was responsible for one run in the eighth while Jacob Myer allowed two runs. Braxton Wilson was credited with the victory after working a scoreless inning of relief.

Higgins went 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored while Fitzpatrick was 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Mastodons offensively.

Game 2 Recap

The Youngstown State baseball team recorded season highs of 13 hits and 12 runs in a 12-6 victory over Purdue Fort Wayne in game two of Sunday's doubleheader at Defiance High School.

Braeden O'Shaughnessy matched career highs with four hits and three RBIs. The junior finished the game 4-for-5 with two doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored. Lucero went 3-for-6 with a triple, two RBIs and a run scored. Padraig O'Shaughnessy went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs while Nasonti was 2-for-6 with an RBI and three runs scored. D'Eusanio hit a two-run home run while Bucko added an RBI single.

YSU starter Matt Brosky earned his second win of the season after allowing four runs, three of them earned, on six hits while striking out nine batters over seven innings. Lane Rhodes retired the side in order in the eighth before Brandon Mikos allowed a pair of runs in the ninth.

The Penguins took an early lead with one run on two hits in the top of the first inning. Nasonti reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a two-out RBI double to left field by Braeden O'Shaughnessy to give YSU a 1-0 lead.

The Mastodons tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning when Blackford led off the frame with a home run left field.

Youngstown State regained the lead by scoring four runs on four hits in the top of the third inning. Francis drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by Lucero. Nasonti reached with a bunt single before Braeden O'Shaughnessy delivered a one-out RBI double to left field that plated Lucero. Padraig O'Shaughnessy followed with a two-run single up the middle that gave the Penguins a 5-1 advantage.

The Penguins pushed their lead to 6-1 in the top of the fourth when D'Eusanio drew a leadoff walk and came around to score on a two-out RBI single by Bucko.

Purdue Fort Wayne cut into YSU's lead with two runs on three hits in the home half of the fourth. Evenson hit a leadoff double, advanced to third on a single by Higgins and scored on an RBI single by Blackford. Later in the inning, Higgins scored on an error following a fielder's choice to shave YSU's lead to 6-3.

Youngstown State responded immediately with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Good reached on a fielder's choice and D'Eusanio followed with a two-run blast to center field to push YSU's lead back to five runs at 8-3.

The Mastodons reduced YSU's lead to 8-4 when Fitzpatrick hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Penguins answered by scoring two runs on three hits in the top of the eighth inning. Nasonti reached on a one-out infield single and came around to score on a two-out RBI single by Braeden O'Shaughnessy. Padraig O'Shaughnessy followed with an RBI double to extend YSU's lead to 10-4.

YSU added two runs in the top of the ninth as Lucero recorded an RBI single and Francis scored on a fielder's choice to push the Penguins' lead to 12-4.

Purdue Fort Wayne plated two runs on a pair of solo home runs from Higgins and Fitzpatrick in the bottom of the ninth to produce the final tally of 12-6.

Purdue Fort Wayne starter Justin Miller suffered the loss after allowing six runs on six hits and fanning five batters over three innings of work. Bryce Martens, Maurer and Sam Assaf each allowed two runs out of the bullpen.

Fitzpatrick went 2-for-4 with two home runs while Blackford and Higgins each had two hits to pace the Mastodons offensively.

Youngstown State will step out of Horizon League play when it plays at Penn State on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Plus and YSNLive.com.
