The Youngstown State baseball program will be hosting a special Golf Extravaganza featuring former World Series champion and nine-time Major League Baseball All-Star Gary Sheffield on Monday, Aug. 10, at The Lake Club in Youngstown, Ohio.
Two events will highlight Sheffield's visit to the Mahoning Valley. On Sunday, Aug. 9, all guests will have an exclusive opportunity to have dinner and a Q&A session with the Major League Baseball legend at The Lake Club. The cost is $250 per attendee, and spots are limited. There will be a cocktail hour with an open bar beginning at 5:30 p.m. before dinner and the Q&A session from 6:30-9 p.m. on Sunday.
The Golf Extravaganza portion of the event featuring Sheffield will begin with a shotgun start at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 10. Each golfer will receive food and drink on the course, a full dinner after golf and a door prize. In addition, food trucks will be on site and there will be games set up throughout the course.
Golf packages include the exclusive aforementioned opportunity to have dinner and a Q&A session with Sheffield on Sunday. Registration ends on Aug. 1, and all proceeds will benefit the YSU baseball program.
Sheffield played for eight different teams during his 22-year career in the Major Leagues from 1988 to 2009. One of the most dynamic hitters of his era, he belted 509 career home runs and joined the highly exclusive 500 home run and 250 stolen base club. Known for his signature bat waggle and lightning-quick swing, Sheffield finished his career with an impressive .292 batting average, 1,676 RBIs, and a career OPS of .907.
A nine-time All-Star and five-time Silver Slugger, Sheffield won the National League batting title with a batting average of .330 with the San Diego Padres in 1992. He helped lead the Florida Marlins to a thrilling World Series Championship in 1997. Widely respected for his versatility, he made the All-Star team with five different franchises and famously never had a single 100-strikeout season, proving his remarkable consistency at the plate.
Sheffield is the only player in MLB history to record 100 RBIs in a season for five different teams. He played for the Milwaukee Brewers, San Diego Padres, Florida Marlins, Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves, New York Yankees, Detroit Tigers, and the New York Mets during his illustrious career. As of his last game, Sheffield ranked second among all active players in walks (1,475), third in runs (1,636), fourth in RBIs (1,676) and fifth in both hits (2,689) and home runs (509).
