Penguins Split Doubleheader with 3-2 Victory in Game Two at New Orleans

The Youngstown State baseball team earned a doubleheader split and took a 2-1 series lead on Saturday against New Orleans at Maestri Field in New Orleans, La.

The Penguins earned a 3-2 victory in game two of Saturday's doubleheader after falling 8-7 in 10 innings in game one.

Youngstown State is now 5-9 overall on the season while New Orleans is 9-4.

Game 1 Recap

New Orleans scored three runs in the bottom of the 10th inning to rally for an 8-7 victory over the Youngstown State baseball team in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at Maestri Field.

The Penguins took a 7-5 lead after a two-out, two-run single by Lucas Nasonti in the top of the 10th inning before the Privateers rallied for three runs in the home half of the frame.

In the bottom of the 10th, Miguel Useche hit a leadoff single, Issac Williams walked and Jeissy De la Cruz reached on an infield single to load the bases with nobody out. Andrew Duran's pinch-hit single through the left side made it a one-run game at 7-6, and Tyler Bischke's two-run single up the middle plated the tying and winning runs.

Youngstown State scored twice in the third and once in the fifth to take 3-0 lead before New Orleans scored in three consecutive innings to take a 5-3 advantage. The Penguins scored single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to force extras before the deciding 10th inning.

Braeden O'Shaughnessy and Steven D'Eusanio each had two hits for the Penguins while Nasonti recorded a team-high two RBIs. New Orleans outhit YSU 14-9 for the contest.

YSU starter Chad Coles allowed two runs on five hits and struck out two batters over 4.1 innings of work while Kenny Misik retired the only batter he faced in the fifth inning. Lane Rhodes was responsible for three runs on four hits in two innings while Brandon Matthews tossed 1.1 scoreless innings. Casey Marshalwitz worked a scoreless ninth inning before Nathan Ball allowed three runs on four hits in the 10th to suffer the loss.

The Penguins got on the board first with two runs on two hits in the top of the third inning. Austin Earl drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on sacrifice bunt by Trey Law and reached third on a groundout by Nasonti. Seth Lucero drew a two-out walk before Braeden O'Shaughnessy and Padraig O'Shaughnessy delivered back-to-back RBI singles to give YSU a 2-0 lead. YSU added a third run in the top of the top of the fifth inning when Lucero drew a one-out walk and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by D'Eusanio.

The Privateers responded with two runs on two hits in the home half of the fifth to pull within a run. Drake Angeron drew a leadoff walk, Bischke singled through the left side and both runners moved up 90 feet on a sacrifice bunt by Kasten Furr. Amani Larry then hit a two-run double to left field to cut YSU's lead to 3-2. New Orleans evened the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth when Useche drew a leadoff walk and came around to score on a one-out RBI single by De la Cruz.

The Privateers took the lead with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the seventh inning. Bischke hit a leadoff single, stole second and scored on a one-out RBI single by Larry. Useche brought home Larry with a two-out RBI single later in the inning to give UNO a 5-3 advantage.

The Penguins got back within a run by scoring once in the top of the eighth inning. Braeden O'Shaughnessy hit a leadoff single, advanced to second on a groundout and scored when Andre Good reached on an error to shave New Orleans' lead to 5-4.

Youngstown State scored another run in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game at 5-5 and force extra innings. Earl hit a leadoff double to set up Dominick Bucko's game-tying, pinch-hit RBI single to right center field that evened the score.

The Penguins continued their momentum by scoring two runs on three hits in the top of the 10th inning. D'Eusanio hit a leadoff single, Good doubled and Dylan Swarmer was intentionally walked to load the bases with nobody out. After two consecutive strikeouts, Nasonti came through with a two-run single through the right side to give YSU a 7-5 edge.

New Orleans starter Dylan Porter allowed two runs on three hits over four innings while John Gray surrendered one unearned run and walked three batters in one third of an inning. Kyle Khachadourian allowed two runs, one of them earned, on three hits over 4.1 innings of relief. Tod Gauthe earned the win after allowing two runs on three hits in 1.1 innings.

Game 2 Recap

Travis Perry allowed just one run on three hits over seven innings to lead the Youngstown State baseball team to a 3-2 victory over New Orleans in game two of Saturday's doubleheader at Maestri Field.

Perry retired the first 12 batters he faced, and he struck out the side in the fourth inning. He finished the game with four strikeouts and two walks over a season-high seven innings while earning his first victory of the season. Nick Perez allowed one run on three hits over two innings of relief to earn his first career save.

Nasonti, Lucero, Braeden O'Shaughnessy and Ian Francis each had two hits to lead the Penguins offensively. Seven different Penguins recorded a hit in the contest as YSU outhit New Orleans 11-6.

The Penguins struck first with one run on two hits in the top of the second inning. Earl and Swarmer hit back-to-back one-out singles and Francis walked to load the bases. Eli Brown then delivered an RBI groundout to second base that scored Earl to give YSU a 1-0 lead.

Youngstown State pushed its lead to 2-0 with one run on two hits in the top of the sixth inning. Braeden O'Shaughnessy led off the inning with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a one-out RBI single by D'Eusanio.

The Privateers pushed across a run in the bottom of the sixth to cut YSU's lead in half at 2-1. Jorge Tejeda was hit by a pitch and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Larry.

The Penguins answered with a run of their own in the top of the seventh. Francis hit a leadoff double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Brown and scored on an RBI single by Nasonti to push YSU's lead to 3-1.

New Orleans made things interesting in the ninth as Anthony Herron Jr. hit a one-out single and Useche followed with a double down the left field line. After Williams plated Herron with an RBI groundout, De la Cruz lined out to a diving Lucero at shortstop to end the game.

New Orleans starter Brandon Mitchell suffered the loss after allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out seven batters over six innings while Beau Blanchard surrendered one run on three hits in one inning of relief. Joshua Cerejo worked a scoreless eighth inning, and Jacob Mead tossed a scoreless ninth for the Privateers.

The Penguins and Privateers will conclude this weekend's four-game series with a single game on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast live on YSNLive.com and UNOPrivateers.com.
