Penguins Drop Both Games of Doubleheader at Belmont

The Youngstown State baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against Belmont on Saturday at E.S. Rose Park in Nashville, Tenn. The Penguins fell 4-0 in game one before dropping game two by a final of 5-2. Both games of the doubleheader were seven innings.

YSU fell to 2-4 on the season while Belmont improved to 7-1. The Bruins also won game one of the four-game series by a final of 3-1 on Friday evening.

Game 1 Recap

Belmont starter Andy Bean pitched six scoreless innings to lead the Bruins to a 4-0 victory over the Penguins in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.

Bean scattered four hits and struck out six batters while walking only one to earn his second victory of the season. Reliever Will Jenkins came on to strike out two batters during a scoreless seventh inning to secure the victory for the Bruins.

Braeden O'Shaughnessy went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles to lead YSU offensively. Lucas Nasonti, Steven D'Eusanio and Dylan Swarmer also recorded base hits as each team recorded five hits in the contest.

YSU starter Travis Perry suffered his first loss of the season after allowing four runs on five hits and striking out three over six innings of work. The senior right-hander retired the first nine batters he faced, and he retired the side in order in four different frames.

The Bruins struck for two runs on two hits in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead. Guy Lipscomb drew a leadoff walk and John Behrends followed with a single to left field. After both runners moved up 90 feet on a double steal, Jackson Campbell delivered a two-out, two-run single to center field to put Belmont in front.

The Bruins added to their advantage with a pair of runs on three hits in the home half of the sixth inning. Behrends hit a leadoff single and Logan Jarvis registered a one-out single to put two runners aboard. After Behrends was picked off at second base, Carson Shacklett hit a two-run home run to right field to push the Belmont lead to 4-0.

Behrends went 2-for-3 to pace the Bruins offensively while Shacklett and Campbell each drove in two runs.

Game 2 Recap

Dominick Bucko hit his first home run of the season as the Penguins fell 5-2 in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader at E.S. Rose Park.

After YSU grabbed an early edge with two runs in the top of the first inning, Belmont scored in each of the final four frames to earn its seventh consecutive victory and take a 3-0 lead in the weekend series.

Bucko, Braeden O'Shaughnessy, Padraig O'Shaughnessy and Swarmer each recorded hits in the contest as Belmont outhit YSU 8-4.

Bucko hit a one-out solo blast to right field in the top of the first inning to put the Penguins on the board first. Braeden O'Shaughnessy followed with a double down the right field line before his brother Padraig O'Shaughnessy brought him home with an RBI single to give YSU a 2-0 lead.

The Bruins answered with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the third to even the score at 2-2. Lipscomb hit an RBI double and Behrends drove in a run with an RBI groundout to tie the contest.

Shacklett hit a one-out solo home run to right field in the fourth, and Belmont scored a run on a wild pitch in the fifth to move in front 4-2. A two-out RBI single by Lipscomb in the bottom of the sixth produced the final tally of 5-2.

The Penguins brought the potential tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh as Austin Earl and Swarmer drew back-to-back, one-out walks. However, Ian Francis struck out looking and Chase Franken grounded out to first base to end the contest.

Belmont starter Dominic Baratta earned his second win of the season after surrendering two runs on four hits and striking out three over five innings pitched. Aaron Hubbell tossed 1.2 scoreless innings of relief while Kyle Brennan came on to get the final out and earn his third save of the campaign.

Chad Coles was saddled with the loss after giving up three runs on five hits and fanning four batters over four innings. Nick Perez was responsible for one run in one-third of an inning while Kenny Misik also worked a third of an inning. Casey Marshalwitz allowed one run on two hits and had a pair of punchouts in 1.1 innings of relief.

Lipscomb went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs to lead Belmont offensively while Shacklett was 2-for-3 with the solo homer.

Youngstown State will try to salvage a win in the series finale with Belmont on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast live on YSNLive.com.
