Weekly Preview
- The Youngstown State baseball team (12-24, 5-7 Horizon League) will host Oakland (17-18, 7-5 Horizon League) for a doubleheader on Friday at Eastwood Field beginning at 1 p.m. before traveling to Milwaukee (13-17, 3-7 Horizon League) for a doubleheader on Sunday at 1 p.m.

- Junior right-hander Matt Brosky will start game one of Friday's doubleheader while senior right-hander Travis Perry is slated to take the ball in game two. Senior right-hander Chad Coles is scheduled to start game one of Sunday's doubleheader while freshman right-hander Lane Rhodes will take the mound for the finale.
- YSU dropped two of three games at Oakland on April 1-3 at the Oakland Baseball Field in Rochester, Mich. The Golden Grizzlies took game one 11-6 before the Penguins bounced back with a 4-2 win in game two. Oakland won the series finale by a final of 14-1.
- The Penguins are coming off a three-game series win over Milwaukee this past weekend at Eastwood Field. YSU won the series opener 4-2 before falling 17-13 in game two. The Guins then took the series finale by a final of 15-4 to earn the series victory.
- The Penguins have two road wins over Power Five opponents this season. YSU defeated ACC member Pitt 5-2 on March 16 before beating Big Ten member Penn State 2-1 on March 22. The win against Penn State marked YSU's first win over a Big Ten opponent since 1996. The Penguins also took Big Ten member Ohio State to extra innings on April 5 before falling 5-4.
- Junior infielder Braeden O'Shaughnessy leads the Penguins with a .355 batting average, 50 hits, eight doubles, seven home runs, 32 RBIs, 25 runs scored, a .574 slugging percentage and 81 total bases. He leads the Horizon League in hits while ranking second in RBIs. O'Shaughnessy also ranks in the top 10 in the league in batting average, home runs, slugging percentage, on-base percentage and OPS. The Poland, Ohio, native has hit safely in each of his last six games.
- Braeden O'Shaughnessy homered in three straight games while batting .579 and slugging 1.158 with 11 hits in 19 at bats over four games played this past week. The junior infielder also recorded two doubles, three home runs, 10 RBIs, seven runs scored, one walk, 22 total bases and a .619 on-base percentage. O'Shaughnessy matched his career high with four hits against Niagara on April 12. He went 4-for-5 with a double, a two-run home run and three RBIs.
- Senior infielder Steven D'Eusanio went 6-for-6 to tie the program's single-game hits record in YSU's 17-13 loss to Milwaukee on Friday. The Willoughby, Ohio, native hit four singles, a double and a home run to go 6-for-6 to match John Koehnlein's six-hit effort in seven at bats on May 24, 2007. Over three games played last week, D'Eusanio batted .667 and slugged .933 with 10 hits in 15 at bats. He also recorded a double, a home run, four RBIs and five runs scored. D'Eusanio ranks second on the team with a .310 batting average, 36 hits, four home runs, a .457 slugging percentage and 53 total bases.
- Junior right-hander Matt Brosky leads the Horizon League with 55.1 innings pitched while ranking second with 57 strikeouts. Brosky also ranks fourth in the league with a 3.42 ERA and a .232 opponent batting average. Senior right-hander Jon Snyder leads the Horizon League with a .201 opponent batting average while ranking seventh with 48 strikeouts and a 4.62 ERA.
- Senior first baseman Padraig O'Shaughnessy leads the Horizon League and ranks 10th in the nation with 36 walks. Junior left-hander Nathan Ball paces the league and ranks 20th nationally with seven saves while senior catcher Dylan Swarmer has caught a league-best 18 runners attempting to steal.
- Senior right-hander Jon Snyder was named a National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper on March 21 after a stellar outing on March 18 at Purdue Fort Wayne. Snyder allowed just one hit and struck out a season-high 10 batters over 6.1 scoreless innings to lead the Penguins to a 4-0 victory. He was also named Horizon League Co-Pitcher of the Week on March 22.
- Sophomore infielder Seth Lucero was named Horizon League Batter of the Week on March 22 after batting .500 and slugging .850 with 10 hits in 20 at bats over four games played at Pitt and Purdue Fort Wayne. He recorded two doubles, a triple, a home run and five RBIs. He also registered six runs scored, 17 total bases, a .500 on-base percentage and two stolen bases in two attempts.

Scouting The Golden Grizzlies
- Oakland is 17-18 overall and 7-5 in Horizon League play after dropping a 6-5 decision at Michigan State on Tuesday. The Golden Grizzlies took two of three games in a non-conference series against Northern Illinois this past weekend.
- Freshman infielder Brandon Nigh is batting .350 and slugging .638 with five doubles, six home runs and 28 RBIs over 29 games and 25 starts. Senior infielder Brad Goulet is batting .338 and slugging .535 with eight doubles, one triple, six home runs, 29 RBIs and 14 stolen bases.
- Senior right-hander Jacob Wosinski boasts a 3.29 ERA and a 2-3 record with a team-high 38 strikeouts in 38.1 innings over eight starts. Junior right-hander Brett Hagen has a 3-1 record and a 5.48 ERA with 28 strikeouts in a team-high 46 innings over nine appearances and six starts.
- The Golden Grizzlies posted an 18-29 overall record and a 12-24 mark in Horizon League play last season. Oakland was picked sixth out of seven teams in the 2022 Horizon League Baseball Preseason Poll.

- Milwaukee is 13-17 overall and 3-7 in Horizon League play after a 12-4 victory in six innings at MSOE on Wednesday. The Panthers will host UIC for a Horizon League doubleheader on Friday before welcoming the Penguins to town on Sunday.
- Junior Aaron Chapman is batting .353 and slugging .440 while leading Milwaukee with 41 hits, 24 RBIs and 51 total bases. Junior first baseman Nate DeYoung is batting .312 and slugging .506 with four doubles, three home runs and 20 RBIs. Junior outfielder Luke Seidel leads the Panthers with seven doubles, 17 walks and 13 stolen bases in 14 attempts.
- Sophomore right-hander AJ Blubaugh leads the Horizon League with a 3.19 ERA while racking up 39 strikeouts and a .218 opponent batting average in 42.1 innings over nine appearances and seven starts. Sophomore left-hander Riley Frey ranks fourth in the Horizon League with 52 strikeouts in a team-high 48.1 innings over nine appearances and eight starts.

Recapping Last Week
Vs. Niagara – Tuesday, April 12 // L 3-5
- Lucas Nasonti and Braeden O'Shaughnessy both had four hits, but Youngstown State lost 5-3 to Niagara at Eastwood Field on Wednesday evening.
- Nasonti and O'Shaughnessy combined for eight of the Penguins' nine hits and all three of their runs. Niagara used seven pitchers to hold the rest of YSU's lineup to 1-for-24 at the plate. It was the first four-hit game in Nasonti's career, and O'Shaughnessy had four hits in a game for the third time in his career.
- YSU starter Lane Rhodes allowed two runs on five hits and struck out six batters over 4.1 innings of work. Alex Cardona suffered the loss after allowing three runs on two hits in 1.2 innings of relief.
Vs. Milwaukee – Thursday, April 14 // W 4-2
- Braeden O'Shaughnessy hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning, and Chad Coles pitched seven strong innings on the mound as Youngstown State beat Milwaukee 4-2 on Thursday evening at Eastwood Field.
- The Penguins trailed 1-0 and 2-1 in the game, but they scored once in the fifth, once in the sixth and twice in the seventh to pick up their first home win of the campaign.
- Dylan Swarmer had a game-high three hits from the eighth spot in the Penguins' lineup, and O'Shaughnesy, Seth Lucero and Andre Good each had two hits. O'Shaughnessy had three RBIs and a run scored as the only player to drive in multiple runs.
- Coles walked five of the first seven batters he faced in the game, but he settled in and pitched seven innings to earn his first win as a starting pitcher in his career. After the early command struggles, Coles walked just one of the final 24 batters he faced. He allowed five hits and six walks while striking out four batters in what was the longest outing of his career.
- Casey Marshalwitz got one out in the top of the eighth before handing the ball to closer Nathan Ball, who retired all five batters he faced to earn his league-leading seventh save of the season.
Vs. Milwaukee – Friday, April 15 // L 13-17
- Youngstown State third baseman Steven D'Eusanio tied the program's single-game hits record with six, but the Penguins came up on the short end of an offensive marathon with Milwaukee on Friday in a 17-13 loss at Eastwood Field.
- D'Eusanio hit four singles, a double and a home run to go 6-for-6 to match John Koehnlein's six-hit effort in seven at bats on May 24, 2007.
- D'Eusanio hit one of seven home runs in the game with a stiff wind blowing out. Milwaukee first baseman Nate DeYoung homered in his final three at bats and hit a three-run blast in the eighth inning that put the Panthers ahead 13-11. Conner Goodman hit a two-out grand slam for Milwaukee in the ninth to extend the advantage to 17-11, and YSU scored twice in the bottom of the ninth for the final margin.
- Milwaukee hit five home runs, which accounted for 13 of its 17 runs in the game. In addition to D'Eusanio's solo homer in the third, Braeden O'Shaughnessy hit a two-run dinger in the seventh as part of a 4-for-6 performance. Padraig O'Shaughnessy was 3-for-6 with four RBIs, and Chase Franken was 3-for-4 with a walk.
- YSU starter Travis Perry pitched a scoreless first four innings, but he gave up six hits in the fifth before handing the ball to the bullpen. Marshalwitz was charged with the loss after permitting a pair of runs with two walks and two strikeouts in two thirds of an inning.
Vs. Milwaukee – Saturday, April 16 // W 15-4
- Youngstown State scored a season-high 15 runs on its way to earning the Horizon League series win with a 15-4 victory over Milwaukee in the series finale on Saturday afternoon at Eastwood Field.
- Milwaukee scored once in the first inning and twice in the second to build a 3-0 lead before YSU scored the next seven runs of the game. After the Panthers scored once in the seventh to get within 7-4, the Penguins answered with three in the home half of the seventh and five in the eighth to pull away for the 15-4 triumph. Youngstown State scored in each of its final six at bats on its way to scoring a season-high 15 runs on 10 hits.
- Steven D'Eusanio went 3-for-5 with two RBIs while Padraig O'Shaughnessy was 2-for-4 with a double, a two-run home run and four RBIs. Chase Franken went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored while Trey Law was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Braeden O'Shaughnessy doubled, drove in a run and scored twice.
- YSU starter Matt Brosky earned his third win of the season after allowing four runs, two of them earned, on 10 hits over seven innings of work. Casey Marshalwitz and Kenny Misik each came on to toss a scoreless inning of relief with two strikeouts.

Following Sunday's doubleheader at Milwaukee, Youngstown State will remain on the road for a non-conference contest at Niagara on Tuesday, April 26, at 3 p.m. The Penguins will then play a three-game Horizon League series at Wright State on April 29-May 1.
