Penguins Battle But Fall in Both Games of Doubleheader at UTRGV

The Youngstown State baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against UT Rio Grande Valley on Saturday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium in Edinburg, Texas. The Penguins fell 8-4 in game one before dropping game two by a final of 11-8. Game one of Saturday's doubleheader was seven innings.

YSU fell to 2-8 on the season while UTRGV improved to 8-3. The Vaqueros also won game one of the four-game series by a final of 6-4 on Friday evening.

Game 1 Recap

UT Rio Grande Valley scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally for an 8-4 victory over the Youngstown State baseball team in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.

The Penguins fell behind 1-0 before Braeden O'Shaughnessy evened the score with a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning. YSU added three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 4-1 edge before the Vaqueros exploded for seven runs in the bottom half of the sixth.

Braeden O'Shaughnessy hit his second home run in as many days and drove in a pair of runs to lead the Penguins offensively. Eli Brown, Seth Lucero and Lucas Nasonti also recorded hits, and Padraig O'Shaughnessy drove in a run. Nine different Vaqueros registered a hit in the contest as UTRGV outhit YSU 9-4.

Youngstown State starter Chad Coles allowed three runs on five hits over five innings while Nathan Ball suffered his first loss of the season after surrendering three runs on two hits without recording an out. Brandon Matthews was responsible for two runs in two thirds of an inning while Kenny Misik allowed one hit in one third of an inning.

UTRGV jumped in front with one run on two hits in the bottom of the first inning. Brandon Pimentel reached on a fielder's choice and came around to score on a two-out RBI double to left field by Bryan Sturges that put the Vaqueros ahead 1-0.

Braeden O'Shaughnessy recorded YSU's first hit of the game in the top of the fourth inning when he belted a two-out solo blast over the wall in left center field that evened the score at 1-1.

Youngstown State scored three runs on three hits and an error in the top of the sixth inning to take a 4-1 advantage. Brown, Lucero and Nasonti hit three straight one-out singles to load the bases. Braeden O'Shaughnessy then reached on a fielder's choice and an ensuing error allowed two runs to score. Padraig O'Shaughnessy followed with a sacrifice fly that brought home Nasonti for YSU's fourth run.

UTRGV answered immediately by scoring seven runs on four hits in the home half of the sixth to take an 8-4 lead. DeAndre' Shelton delivered an RBI single to get the rally started before Jacob Sanchez hit a three-run home run to put the Vaqueros in front 5-4. Sturges brought home a run with an RBI groundout and Steven Lancia added a two-run single to push the UTRGV lead to 8-4.

UTRGV starter Colten Davis allowed four runs, three of them earned, on four hits and struck out six batters over seven innings to earn the complete-game victory. He retired the first 11 batters he faced before O'Shaughnessy's home run in the fourth. Davis retired the side in order in the first, second, third, fifth and seventh frames.

Game 2 Recap

The Youngstown State baseball team came back from a four-run deficit before falling 11-8 to UT Rio Grande Valley in game two of Saturday's doubleheader at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.

After falling behind 5-1, the Penguins scored five times in the top of the sixth to take a 6-5 edge. However, UTRGV outscored YSU 6-2 the rest of the game to sweep the doubleheader a take a 3-0 lead in the four-game weekend series.

Freshman catcher Ian Francis highlighted YSU's five-run sixth inning with a three-run home run, the first of his career. Braeden O'Shaughnessy and Padraig O'Shaughnessy each had two hits, and Lucero hit his first home run as a Penguin.

Lucero led off the game with a solo home run to left field to put the Penguins in front 1-0.

Pimentel tied the game with a solo home run of his own in the home half of the first inning before an RBI single by Diego Ramirez gave UTRGV a 2-1 advantage.

The Penguins loaded the bases with three consecutive two-out walks in the top of the fourth inning but Chase Bridges was able to strike out Francis to get UTRGV out of the jam.

The Vaqueros broke through for three runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend their lead to 5-1. Freddy Rojas Jr. plated a pair of runs with a two-run double, and he proceeded to score on an RBI double by Jacob Sanchez.

Youngstown State responded by scoring five runs on four hits in the top of the sixth inning to take a 6-5 lead. Nasonti and Braeden O'Shaughnessy hit back-to-back singles to begin the rally, and Padraig O'Shaughnessy followed with an RBI single that plated Nasonti. After Steven D'Eusanio drove in Braeden O'Shaughnessy when he reached on a fielder's choice, Francis blasted a three-run home run to left field to put the Penguins back in front by a run.

UTRGV answered with five runs on three hits in the home half of the sixth to regain a 10-6 advantage. Alex Kelch plated the first run with an RBI single, Pimentel followed with a two-run double and Rojas Jr. hit a two-run home run to right field to give the Vaqueros a four-run lead.

Austin Earl and Francis drew back-to-back walks to begin the top of the eighth, and both scored on a pinch-hit, two-run triple down the right field line by Andre Good that pulled the Penguins within 10-8.

Pimentel hit his second solo homer of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning to produce the final tally of 11-8.

YSU starter Travis Perry allowed five runs on six hits and struck out five batters over 4.2 innings of work. The senior right-hander retired the side in order in the second and he struck out the side in the fourth.

Nick Perez was responsible for four runs on two hits in two thirds of an inning while Alex Cardona allowed one run over 1.2 innings of relief. Casey Marshalwitz allowed one run on two hits and had a pair of strikeouts in one inning.

UTRGV starter Angelo Cabral allowed one run on one hit over 3.2 innings while Bridges came on to record the final out of the fourth. Diego Escobedo allowed five runs, four of them earned, on four hits over 1.1 innings while Hunter Rosenbaum fanned three batters over 1.2 scoreless innings to earn the win. Albert Baez was responsible for two runs before Max Balderrama Jr. came on to collect the save by working two scoreless innings of relief.

Pimentel went 5-for-5 with two doubles, two home runs, four RBIs and four runs scored to lead the Vaqueros offensively. Rojas Jr. finished the game 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and four RBIs.

The Penguins and Vaqueros will conclude their four-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+
