Warren, Ohio – Sophomore Valentina Peña Anaya earned medalist honors as the Youngstown State women's golf team matched the single-season school record with its fifth tournament victory of the season at the YSU Spring Invitational, which concluded on Monday at Trumbull Country Club.
The 2025-26 season marks the second consecutive campaign and the fifth time in program history the Penguins have won five tournaments in a single campaign. The Guins have now won five events in a season four different times under head coach Nate Miklos, who also guided his team to five tournament victories in 2020-21, 2022-23 and 2024-25.
Youngstown State finished the YSU Spring Invitational with a team two-round team total of 620 to conclude its annual two-day spring tournament at 44 over par. The Penguins opened the event with a 313 (+25) on Sunday before posting a 307 (+19) in the second and final session on Monday to cruise to their second straight tournament title.
Mercyhurst finished 36 shots back of YSU in second place with a 656 while Le Moyne placed third with a 665. Saint Joseph's finished fourth with a 673 while La Salle was fifth with a 679.
Five Penguins finished in the top 10 on the individual leaderboard, and Peña Anaya became the fourth different YSU player to earn an individual tournament victory this season.
Peña Anaya claimed the third individual tournament win of her career with a two-round score of 149 (74-75). The sophomore carried a four-shot lead into Monday's final round after a two-over-par 74 on Sunday that featured 14 pars and one birdie. Peña Anaya's second-round 75 included nine pars and three birdies as she fired an even-par 36 on the back nine.
Neeranuch Prajunpanich placed third with a two-round total of 153 (79-74) to collect her eighth top 10 performance in nine stroke-play events this season. The junior's second-round 74 featured 14 pars and a birdie on the par-four No. 1 as she carded an even-par 36 on the front nine.
Maddi Shoults finished tied for fourth with a two-round 156 (81-75) to earn her fifth top 10 performance of the season. The senior's final-round 75 included 10 pars and three birdies as she turned in a one-under-par 35 on the front nine.
Playing as an individual, Bella Saur placed sixth with a two-round score of 158 (78-80) to pick up her second top 10 finish of the season. The sophomore birded No. 6 and No. 9 during the final round of play on Monday.
Sofia Perez Escarcena finished tied for ninth with a two-round total of 162 (79-83) to earn her fifth top 10 performance of the campaign. Matilyn Zines placed 15th with a two-round 165 (82-83) while Maureen Burns finished tied for 16th with a 166 (81-85). Zines carded birdies at No. 15 and No. 17 during the final round while Burns birdied No. 5 on Monday.
Playing as an individual, Adena Rugola finished tied for 26th with a two-round score of 172 (88-84). The senior recorded a birdie at No. 9 during the opening round of action on Sunday.
Mercyhurst's Lauren Iannetta was the individual runner up with a two-round total of 152 (78-74).
Youngstown State will continue its spring schedule on April 17-18 with the Therese Hession Buckeye Invitational at The Ohio State University Golf Club's Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio.
