Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla. -- The Youngstown State women's golf team is in second place following a weather-extended opening round of the 2026 Horizon League Women's Golf Championship on Saturday at Mission Resort + Club.
The Penguins began Saturday's first round in the early afternoon and competed for approximately three hours before play was suspended due to heavy rainfall and lightning in the area. After a weather delay of slightly more than an hour, YSU retook the course and completed a long day on Mission Resort + Club's El Campeon Course.
The Guins are in second place on the team leaderboard following a first-round score of 313 (+21). Oakland seized a four-shot first-round lead with an opening-round score of 309 (+17) while Purdue Fort Wayne is one stroke back of YSU in third place after posting a 314 (+22). Northern Kentucky sits in fourth place with a 315, Detroit Mercy is fifth with a 318 and Green Bay and IU Indy are tied for sixth after each recorded a first-round 324.
Neeranuch Prajunpanich, the defending individual champion at the Horizon League Championship, is tied for ninth on the individual leaderboard after carding a four-over-par round of 77 in the first round on Saturday. Starting on No. 1, the junior's first round featured 11 pars and three birdies coming at No. 3, No. 6 and No. 17.
Maddi Shoults is 11th after turning in an opening-round score of 78. The senior's opening session included 12 pars and a birdie on the par-four No. 16. Shoults shot an even-par 37 on the back nine to close out her first round.
Valentina Peña Anaya and Bella Saur are tied for 12th after each turned in a first-round 79 on Saturday. Peña Anaya carded nine pars and a pair of birdies coming at No. 11 and No. 14 while Saur tallied 11 pars and a birdie on the par-five No. 7.
Sofia Perez Escarcena is 23rd on the individual leaderboard after recording an opening-round 82. The sophomore's first round featured birdies at No. 3 and No. 16.
Eva Maley of Northern Kentucky fired a one-under-par round of 72 on Saturday to grab a three-shot individual lead ahead of Sunday's second session while five different golfers are tied for second place after posting a first-round 75.
Youngstown State is scheduled to begin its second round at the 2026 Horizon League Women's Golf Championship on Sunday morning. The Penguins will tee off on No. 10 beginning at 7:50 a.m. Live scoring will be available via Scoreboard by Clippd.
