Penguins Maintain Second Place at 2026 Horizon League Championship

Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla. -- The Youngstown State women's golf team is in second place following Sunday's second round of play at the 2026 Horizon League Women's Golf Championship at Mission Resort + Club.

After two rounds on Mission Resort + Club's El Campeon Course, the Penguins are nine shots back of Oakland in the team standings. The Golden Grizzlies carded a 307 on Sunday and have a two-day total of 616 while Youngstown State had a second-round 312 and has a total of 625. Northern Kentucky sits in third (631) while Purdue Fort Wayne (632) and Detroit Mercy (634) round out the top five.

Individually, Maddi Shoults is tied for fourth on the individual leaderboard after firing a two-over par 75 for her second round and sits at 153 after two days. Shoults was in 11th place following the first round with a 78. Her two-round total has her four shots behind a group of three leaders.

On Sunday, Shoults had 16 pars and just two bogeys during her round. She, along with the rest of the Penguins, started on No. 10. After a bogey at the 11th, she parred the next 13 holes before a bogey at No. 7. Those were the only two bogeys of her impressive round.

Neeranuch Prajunpanich, the defending individual champion at the Horizon League Championship, is positioned 11th on the leaderboard after carding a round of 79 on Sunday. Her round featured 10 pars and a birdie on No. 16 giving her a 156 after the first two days of the championship tournament.

Valentina Peña Anaya remains tied for 12th place after the second round with a two-round total of 157. She followed a first round 79 with second round 78 on Sunday. Starting on No. 10, she bogeyed her opening hole before settling in with nine straight pars.

Sofia Perez Escarcena is 21st on the individual leaderboard after recording a second-round 80, which was a two-stroke improvement following her opening-round 82 giving her a total of 162. On Saturday, she opened with three pars before carding birdies on No. 13 and No. 14. She carded an even par 37 on the back nine.

Matilyn Zines was substituted into the lineup and shot an 80 in Sunday's second session. She shot an even par 37 on the back nine with birdies at No. 13 and No. 15. Her round also featured nine pars.

There's a three-way tie atop the individual leaderboard which features Eva Maley of Northern Kentucky, Olivia Hemmila of Oakland and Ariel Chang of Detroit Mercy. The trio sits at 149 for the event and holds a four-shot lead over third place.

YSU will tee off on No. 1 at 7:50 a.m. on Monday morning in the final round of the 2026 HL Women's Golf Championship.
