Warren, Ohio -- Sophomore Valentina Peña Anaya fired a two-over-par 74 to help the Youngstown State women's golf team take a 16-shot lead following a windy and cold first round of the YSU Spring Invitational on Sunday at Trumbull Country Club.
The Penguins finished the opening round of the two-day, 36-hole tournament at 25 over par with a team score of 313. YSU holds a 16-shot advantage over second place Le Moyne heading into Monday's second and final session.
Peña Anaya holds a four-shot lead on the individual leaderboard after her first-round 74 on Sunday. The sophomore's opening round featured 14 pars and a birdie on the par-five No. 9. Peña Anaya made par or better on each of her final 13 holes while firing an even-par 36 on the back nine.
Bella Saur is in a tie for second place after carding a first-round 78. Neeranuch Prajunpanich and Sofia Perez Escarcena are tied for sixth individually after each recorded an opening-round 79 on Sunday while Maddi Shoults is tied for 11th following a first-round 81.
Maureen Burns is also tied for 11th after turning in an opening-round 81 while Matilyn Zines is tied for 13th following a first-round 82 on Sunday. Playing as an individual, Adena Rugola concluded the first round with a score of 88.
Monday's second and final round of the YSU Spring Invitational is currently scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Live scoring will be available via Golfstat through links posted on YSUsports.com.
