Smyrna, Tenn. — Youngstown State's bowling team won its first three head-to-head Baker matches and finished with a 3-2 record on Friday, the opening day of the 2026 Music City Classic. The three-day event hosted by Vanderbilt at the Smyrna Bowling Center continues with five traditional matches of qualifying on Saturday and three best-of-seven Baker matches in a bracket format on Sunday.
The Penguins beat Prairie View A&M and LIU to start the morning, and their best set came in a 1,024-942 victory over No. 12 North Carolina A&T. YSU shot 1,006 in a 30-pin loss to No. 10 Sacred Heart, and it dropped its finale 985-922 to No. 11 Niagara.
YSU's total pinfall was 4,831 on Friday, which put it 14th among 34 teams competing in the large field.
The traditional round on Saturday will begin at 10:30 a.m. Eastern against Jackson State. The Penguins will then bowl against No. 7 Maryville, No. 13 McKendree, FDU and Wisconsin-Whitewater.
