Penguins Top Wichita State in Opening-Round Thriller

Harahan, La. — Youngstown State's bowling team emerged victorious from a three-hour, opening-round battle with Wichita State on Wednesday to move into the winner's bracket of the 2026 Conference USA Championship.

The No. 7 Penguins advance to play No. 3 Arkansas State on Thursday at 10 a.m. Eastern at Colonial Lanes in Harahan, La., following their 2-1 victory in a mega match with the Shockers. Wichita State, which is the No. 6 seed and the defending Conference USA champion, drops into the contender's bracket for an elimination match against No. 9 Sacred Heart on Thursday morning.

With five freshmen and a transfer in suburban New Orleans making their debut at the Conference USA Championship, Youngstown State met the moment in its first-ever postseason match against Wichita State. The Penguins shook off a tough first three frames of the traditional round to rally for a 1,044-985 win, and they responded after a close loss in the Baker round to go toe-to-toe in the best-of-seven tiebreaker.

Amber Mason, one of three freshmen in YSU's starting lineup, fired the highest score on the pair in the traditional round with a 246 from the leadoff position. Gianna Varano, another freshman, followed with a 202 in the second spot in the lineup, and the Penguins had a 59-pin advantage from those two spots. Transfer Amy Chrzanowski shot 224 to provide a 53-pin edge in the fourth slot, and anchor Kara Beissel shot 202 to give YSU four players over 200.

The Penguins stayed hot at the start at the Baker round, starting with games of 234 and 223 to build a 55-pin advantage. Wichita State didn't back down and got a pin back in game three, and the Shockers took a big chunk from the margin with a 239-198 win in game four. Wichita State then used a late string in game five to shoot 226 and pull ahead for a 1,060-1,043 win to even the mega match.

In the best-of-seven, the teams were even through four games as the left lane provided better scores. Youngstown State broke the ice on lane 16 in game five with a 245-208 win to take a 3-2 lead, and Wichita State followed with a 30-pin win on the right lane in game six to even the point at 3-3. The Shockers, as the higher seed in the match, elected to stay on 16 for game seven, and Youngstown State stayed clean on lane 15 to win 226-190. Beissel, Chrzanowski and Varano strung three strikes together in the fifth through seventh frames as Wichita State opened in the fifth, and Mason and Beissel combined for a double in the ninth and 10th to lock up the win.

If the Penguins beat the Red Wolves on Thursday morning, they would advance in the winner's bracket to play No. 2 Vanderbilt on Friday at 10 a.m. Eastern. If YSU falls to Arkansas State, it would face Tulane in an elimination match on Thursday at 3 p.m. Eastern. All matches at the tournament are being broadcast live on ESPN+.
