Lockport, Ill. — Youngstown State's bowling team beat two teams ranked in the top 20 as part of a four-win day on Saturday as the Flyer Classic continued at Strike & Spare II.
The Penguins are eighth after the two days of qualifying, and they will take an 8-2 record into bracket play on Sunday.
Youngstown State improved its pinfall with each set, starting with an 890 and improving to 1,029. YSU beat Aurora and Emmanuel to start the day, and its lone blemish was an eight-pin loss to Lewis, the tournament's host. The Penguins finished traditional play with a 1,002-964 win over No. 10 Maryville and a 1,029-954 victory over No. 17 Tulane.
Amber Mason was YSU's top individual finisher in 12th place with a 1,065 set.
Youngstown State opens the best-of-seven Baker bracket against No. 16 Newman at 9:10 a.m. on Sunday.
