Charleston, S.C. – The Youngstown State women's golf team posted a 2-1 team record to earn a runner-up finish at The Oyster Shuck Match Play, which concluded on Tuesday at Charleston Municipal Golf Course.
The Penguins opened the spring portion of their 2025-26 season on Monday with a 2-0 team performance on day one of the match play event hosted by The Citadel.
YSU defeated Presbyterian 4-1 in the opening round of the tournament on Monday morning to advance into the winner's bracket. Sofia Perez Escarcena (3&1), Neeranuch Prajunpanich (6&5), Bella Saur (3&2) and Maddi Shoults (5&4) each won individual matches during the first round of competition.
The Penguins improved to 2-0 as a team with a 3-2 victory over Gardner-Webb in the winner's bracket on Monday afternoon. Perez Escarcena (4&3), Prajunpanich (6&5) and Valentina Peña Anaya (3&2) were each victorious as individuals against the Runnin' Bulldogs to send YSU to the championship match on Tuesday.
Youngstown State concluded the event with a 4-1 loss to Samford in the finals on Tuesday to finish as the tournament runner-up with a 2-1 overall record. Peña Anaya won her individual match 7&6 in the final round of action.
Samford advanced to Tuesday's championship match with team wins over Winthrop and High Point on Monday. The Bulldogs claimed the tournament crown with a 3-0 overall record. YSU, Radford and High Point each finished at 2-1 while Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian and Winthrop each finished at 1-2. The Citadel concluded the event with a record of 0-3.
Youngstown State will continue its spring season on March 2-3 with the Howard Lady Bison Intercollegiate at Hawkstone Country Club in Gainesville, Fla.
