The Youngstown State men's and women's track and field teams made an impressive return to the track on Friday at the YSU Collegiate Invitational presented by Southwoods Health.
Winning events on Friday for the men were Brandon Hutchinson (long jump), Brayden Green (triple jump), Lukas Lang (pole vault), Trenton Shutters (800m), Micah Mitchell (60m hurdles) while Joseph Owusu-Ansah won the 60m and 200m dashes.
Winning events on Friday for the women were Kaitlyn Eger (pole vault), Maggie Hopple (mile), Lea Parham (60m hurdles) and Ava Reeves (60m and 200m dashes).
Reeves led a 1-2-3 YSU performance in the 60m dash winning with a time of 7.65 seconds. It was her first collegiate victory. Placing second was Anais Martinez while Elle Pearsall was third. Later in the day, Reeves captured the race win in the 200m posting a time of 25.22 seconds while Martinez earned a
Owusu-Ansah ran to the victory in the 60m dash clocking a time of 6.76 seconds as YSU had runners place first, fourth and sixth in the finals. Later, Owusu-Ansah spearheaded a strong Penguins effort in the 200m by winning with a time of 21.26 seconds. Finishing third was Jake Mcentyre while Caedeon Trotter was fifth and Shamir Rose was seventh. In the 400m, Rose was third at 49.40 while Teziah Howard was sixth.
In the 800m run, freshman Karis McElhaney placed second in the women's race with a time of 2:14.57. For the men, Shutters posted the winning time of 1:51.41 while Jacob Puhalla came in third.
In the women's mile, Hopple held off three West Virginia runners at the tape to win with a time of 5:03.13 to claim the title by 0.47 seconds. For the men, Connor Shingleton placed second with a time of 4:16.89. Shingleton won the first heat, but the winner came from the second heat with a time of 4:16.85. Noah Johnson added a fourth-place effort for the Guins.
In the women's 3,000m, the Guins took second, third and fourth in the race. Megan Stafford was second, Molly Hopple was third and Lillian Katsaras was fourth.
The men and women swept the 60m hurdles races. For the women, Parham clocked a time of 8.78 seconds in the final while Ava Littler was fifth. The men went first, third and fourth led by Mitchell's time of 8.07 seconds. In third was Clancy Chrystal at 8.27 seconds while Garrett Laubacher was fourth at 8.37 seconds.
In the men's high jump, the Guins had second and third place efforts. Finishing second with a leap of 2.08m was Noah Crozier while Isaiah Barker was third at 2.02m. For the women, Mia Dionsio was fifth.
In the women's pole vault, the Guins had four of the top six performances. Winning was Eger with a clearance of 3.83m while Melana Schumaker was third at 3.73m. For the men, Lang won with a best effort of 5.00m.
Hutchinson led a strong outing in the long jump with a career-best leap of 7.25m to take the victory. Emmanuel Asabere came in third while Aaron Berardinelli came in fifth.
Green's final leap of 14.65m helped move him into the top five in school history in the event. Kalli Knoble earned a fifth-place finish in the triple jump.
Jaden Kirkwood added a third-place finish in the shot put with a toss of 16.20m. Brooklynn McIntyre was second in the weight throw with a toss of 14.84m. Levi Glassmeyer was third in the men's weight throw.
A small group of YSU throwers will be in action tomorrow at the Penn State Nittany Lion Challenge. The Penguins a group return to action next Friday at Kent State.
