Penguins Match School Record with Fifth Victory at YSU Spring Invitational

The Youngstown State women's golf team matched the single-season school record with its fifth tournament victory of the season at the YSU Spring Invitational, which concluded on Monday from Avalon Lakes Golf Course in Warren, Ohio.

The 2024-25 season marks the fifth time in program history the Penguins have won five tournaments in a single campaign. The Guins have now won five events in a season three times under head coach Nate Miklos, who also guided his team to five tournament victories in 2020-21 and 2022-23.

Youngstown State finished the YSU Spring Invitational with a team two-round team total of 582, which ranks as the third-lowest 36-hole performance in program history. The Penguins opened the event with a one-under-par team score of 287 on Sunday before posting a 295 in the final session on Monday to finish at six over par as a team. YSU's first-round 287 is tied for the fourth-lowest 18-hole performance in school history.

Bucknell finished 14 shots back of YSU in second place with a 596 while Saint Francis placed third with a 606. Duquesne finished fourth with a 623 while Mercyhurst rounded out the top five with a 631.

The Guins had three of the top four finishers on the individual leaderboard as Neeranuch Prajunpanich and Valentina Peña Anaya each finished at even par to share medalist honors.

Prajunpanich fired a two-round score of 144 (72-72) to earn her fourth first-place finish of the season. The sophomore becomes just the fourth player in program history and the first since Emily Dixon in 2015-16 to win at least four events in a season. Prajunpanich's final-round 72 featured eight pars and six birdies as she shot a one-under-par 35 on the front nine.

Peña Anaya matched her career-low round with a two-under-par 70 in the final round on Monday after an opening-round 74 to collect her second first-place finish of the campaign. The freshman's final-round 70 included 12 pars and four birdies.

Maddi Shoults finished tied for third place with a two-round total of 146 (69-77) for her second top 10 finish of the season. The junior carded 12 pars and a birdie on the par-four No. 9 on Monday after taking the first-round lead with a bogey-free 69 in on Sunday.

Lizzie Saur finished tied for ninth with a two-round 151 (72-79) to pick up her third top 10 finish of the season. The senior recorded birdies at No. 7, No. 9 and No. 14 during Monday's final round.

Sofia Perez Escarcena finished tied for 12th with a two-round score of 153 (77-76) while Bella Saur finished tied for 28th with a 164 (82-82).

Playing as individuals, Taylor Morrone turned in a final-round 86 and Sophia Rivera concluded the tournament with a 90.

Youngstown State will continue its spring schedule on April 12-13 with the Therese Hession Buckeye Invitational at the OSU Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio.
