Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla. – The Youngstown State women's golf team shares the lead with Purdue Fort Wayne after the opening round of the Horizon League Golf Championships at the Mission Inn Resort's El Campeon course.
Both the Penguins and Mastodons each had rounds of 313 and have built a 14-shot lead over the co-third-place teams Green Bay and Oakland.
Three of the Guins' top five golfers are in the top six in the individual standings.
PFW's Lillian Gottman and Sofia Perez Escarcena are tied following round one with a 76. In sixth place are Neeranuch Prajunpanich and Valentina Peña Anaya who had rounds of 78.
Perez Escarcena, who was the fifth golfer in the lineup, made an impressive HL debut on Saturday. She had four birdies with those coming at No. 6, No. 7, No. 10 and No. 14. She had a strong one-under-par 35 on the front nine. Additionally, she was two-under par through 12 holes.
Prajunpanich, who was making her second HL appearance, was steady in her opening round with 11 pars and birdies at Nos. 1 and 15. In her debut, Peña Anaya had seven pars, six bogeys and three birdies. She had birdies at No. 3, No. 8 and No. 17,
Lizzie Saur is in 14th place following the first round. She carded an 81 for the day and started strong with a birdie at No. 1. Maddi Shoults resides in 20th place following an opening 83. She had a birdie, four, at the par-5, seventh.
The second round of the championships is set for Easter Sunday. YSU's first golfer set to tee off will be at 12:20 p.m.
