Penguins Finish Third at Howard University Invitational

Gainesville, Fla. – The Youngstown State women's golf team finished third at the 54-hole Howard University Invitational which concluded on Tuesday at Hawkstone Country Club.

Individually, the Guins had three of the top 11 finishers in the event. Finishing sixth was Neeranuch Prajunpanich who finished with a three-round score of 224. Placing ninth was Valentina Peña Anaya who carded a 227 while  Sofia Perez Escarcena was 11th firing a 229.

In the team race, YSU tallied a three-round score of 904 with rounds of 296, 305 and 303. Winning the event was Queens from Charlotte, N.C., with a three-round total of 880 while Howard, the host school, was second at 886. The Guins placed ahead of seven other schools in the 10-team field.

Prajunpanich carded rounds of 76, 73 and 75 during the tournament. She had three birdies during her second round and added another during her first 18. She had eight pars on the back nine on Tuesday.

Anaya had scores of 73, 80 and 74 in the two days. In round one, she had a birdie at No. 13 and her second round featured a birdie at No. 1. On Tuesday, she had a birdie and 13 pars.

Escarcena posted scores of 74, 78 and 77 at the tournament. Her first round was highlighted by birdies at No. 1 and No. 7. In her second round, she had another birdie at nine and added one at 14. On Tuesday, she had birdies at the fifth and the 13th.

Maddi Shoults finished 19th overall with a three-round 231 as she carded scores of 75, 74 and 82. The junior had two birdies in her first and second rounds.

Lizzie Saur was 22nd carding a three-round 237 as she turned in rounds of 78, 82 and 77. The senior's round on Tuesday included birdies at No. 10 and No. 15.

Competing as an individual, Bella Saur finished 21st with a three-round 235. She had rounds of 81, 78 and 76 at the tournament. The freshman's first round featured four birdies with three coming on the front side. In her second round, she had three birdies which came at Nos. 3, 10 and 14.

The Penguins are next in action on March 24-25 when they compete in The Julie hosted by Northern Kentucky at Elks Run Golf Club in Batavia, Ohio.
