Penguins Finish Destination Orlando with Seven Wins

Orlando, Fla. — Youngstown State's bowling team finished up competition at the three-day Destination Orlando event by going 1-2 in its head-to-head matches on Sunday.

The Penguins finished the three-day tournament at AMF Sky Lanes with a 7-6 record and 12th in the final standings.

"What a wonderful weekend we've enjoyed on and off the lanes," YSU Head Coach Doug Kuberski said on Sunday. "I thought we did some of our best bowling today and are elevating our communication and execution across the board. There are some little things for us to clean up over the next three weeks, and I know we are excited to get back after it."

Youngstown State was 16th in the standings after Friday, and it moved up six spots after a solid Saturday. The Penguins jumped up to ninth at the end of qualifying after a 969-827 win over Texas Southern to start the morning, but they lost their matches in the best-of-seven bracket to drop to 12th.

The Penguins fell behind 2-0 to No. 14 Mount St. Mary's in their first best-of-seven Baker match, but they fired games of 194 and 235 to win the next two games and even the match. The Mount won game five by four pins, 206-202, and they claimed game six 203-180.

Against No. 18 UAB, the Penguins fired a 222 in game one to win by 60 pins, but the Blazers won the next three games to take a 3-1 lead in the match. YSU stayed alive with a 190-155 win in game five, and UAB finished the match with a 232-163 in in game six.

Youngstown State's next tournament will be the Colonial Lanes Classic in suburban New Orleans on Nov. 21-23.
