Boardman, Ohio -- The Youngstown State women's golf team pulled away in Monday's second and final round of the 10th annual Roseann Schwartz Invitational at Mill Creek Golf Course to earn its second victory of the fall season.
In just her third collegiate tournament, freshman Valentina Peña Anaya fired a two-round total of 142 (70-72) to finish tied atop the individual leaderboard. Sophomore Neeranuch Prajunpanich, who also finished with a two-round score of 142 (71-71), was awarded medalist honors based on low final-round score. Each player's performance is tied for the fourth-lowest 36-hole score in program history.
The Penguins posted a team score of 292 in the opening round on Sunday to take a five-shot advantage into Monday's final session. Youngstown State proceeded to record a second-round 294 to finish with a 586 and claim their home tournament title for the third straight season. YSU's two-round 586 ranks as the sixth-lowest 36-hole team performance in school history.
The Penguins won the event by nine strokes over runner-up Purdue Fort Wayne, which finished with a two-round total of 595. Bucknell finished third with a 596, Indiana State placed fourth with a 597 and Western Michigan rounded out the top five with a 607.
Prajunpanich's one-under-par 71 in the second round on Monday included nine pars, four birdies and a clutch eagle on the par-five No. 18. The sophomore earned medalist honors for the second time in her career.
After firing a career-low, two-under-par 70 in the opening round on Sunday, Peña Anaya shot an even-par 72 on Monday to finish tied atop the individual leaderboard. The true freshman's second-round 72 featured 12 pars and three birdies as she shot a one-under-par 35 on the front nine.
Sofia Perez Escarcena finished tied for 16th with a two-round score of 151 (76-75). The freshman's second-round 75 included nine pars and three birdies.
Maddi Shoults also finished tied for 16th with a two-round 151 (75-76). The junior's second-round 76 featured 13 pars and a birdie on the par-four No. 5.
Lizzie Saur finished tied for 30th with a two-round total of 155 (79-76). The senior's final-round 76 included eight pars and four birdies.
Playing as an individual, Bella Saur concluded the tournament with a two-round score of 160 (81-79). The true freshman's career-low 79 in the second round featured 11 pars and a birdie on the par-five No. 9.
Adena Rugola finished the event with a two-round 163 (76-87) while Taylor Morrone recorded a two-round 179 (86-93).
Youngstown State will continue its fall schedule on Sept. 30-Oct. 1 with the Butler Fall Invitational at Highland Golf & Country Club in Indianapolis, Ind.
