Boardman, Ohio -- The Youngstown State women's golf team holds a five-stroke lead following Sunday's first round of the 10th annual Roseann Schwartz Invitational at Mill Creek Golf Course.
The Penguins posted a single-round team score of 292 on Sunday to seize a five-stroke advantage over second-place Purdue Fort Wayne heading into Monday's second and final round. In addition, a pair of Penguins find themselves in the top five on the individual leaderboard.
Valentina Peña Anaya is in second place after firing a career-low, two-under-par round of 70 on Sunday. The true freshman's opening round featured 14 pars and three birdies as she carded a one-under-par 35 on both the front and back nine.
Neeranuch Prajunpanich is tied for third place after turning in a season-low, one-under-par round of 71 on Sunday. The sophomore's first round included 11 pars and four birdies as she shot a one-under-par 35 on the front nine.
Maddi Shoults is tied for 15th after recording a three-over-par 75 on Sunday. The junior's opening session featured seven pars and four birdies as she shot an even-par 36 on the back nine.
Sofia Perez Escarcena and Adena Rugola are tied for 17th as each posted a four-over-par 76 on Sunday. Perez Escarcena notched 11 pars and two birdies while Rugola recorded nine pars and a pair of birdies while playing as an individual.
Lizzie Saur concluded the first round of action with a single-round score of 79 that included a birdie on the par-three No. 14. Playing as individuals, Bella Saur finished the opening round with an 81 while Taylor Morrone finished with an 86.
Cleveland State's Kaitlin Kormuth holds the individual lead by one stroke after carding a three-under-par 69 on Sunday.
In the team race, Purdue Fort Wayne sits in second place at nine over par after an opening-round 297 while Indiana State is in third place after recording a 299. Western Michigan occupies fourth place with a 300 while Bucknell rounds out the top five with a 301.
