Boardman, Ohio -- Junior transfer Maddi Shoults claimed medalist honors as the Youngstown State women's golf team earned a season-opening victory at the YSU Kickoff on Monday at Mill Creek Golf Course.
Playing as an individual, Shoults fired a four-under-par 68 in her YSU debut to claim medalist honors in the 40-player field. The Circleville, Ohio, native was an NAIA Second-Team All-American each of the last two seasons at Ottawa University Arizona. Shoult's bogey-free round featured 14 pars and four birdies as she shot a three-under-par 33 on the back nine.
The Penguins posted a single-round team score of 305 to pick up a 21-stoke victory over runner-up Le Moyne. Westminster placed third with a 339 while John Carroll finished fourth with a 366.
Reigning Horizon League Freshman of the Year Neeranuch Prajunpanich turned in an even-par round of 72 to finish second on the individual leaderboard. The sophomore's round included 10 pars and four birdies as she shot a two-under-par 34 on the front nine.
The Penguins had each of the top three individual finishers as Sofia Perez Escarcena placed third in her collegiate debut with a four-over-par 76. The true freshman's round featured seven pars and five birdies.
True freshman Valentina Peña Anaya finished fifth in her collegiate debut with a single-round score of 78 while senior Lizzie Saur tied for sixth with a 79. Peña Anaya recorded a pair of birdies and an eagle on the par-four No. 11 during her first round as a Penguin.
Junior Adena Rugola and true freshman Bella Saur each carded a round of 81 to tie for ninth as YSU had seven players in the top-10 individually. True freshman Taylor Morrone shot a single-round 82 in her collegiate debut while Kelly Hutton was forced to withdraw due to injury.
Youngstown State will continue its fall schedule on Sept. 14-15 with Penn State's Nittany Lion Invitational at the PSU Blue Course in University Park, Pa.
