The Youngstown State women's tennis team opens fall tournament play at the Eastern Michigan Fall Invitational this Friday and Saturday at the Chippewa Club in Ypsilanti, Mich.
Matches will begin each day at 9 a.m. Teams competing in the two-day event are Eastern Michigan, Bowling Green, Findlay, Oakland, Wayne State and Youngstown State.
There are seven singles flights and four doubles flights for the event. First-round winners play in semis with winners playing for the championships and losers playing for third place. All first-round losers play in consolation semifinals with winners playing for fifth and losers playing for seventh.
The Penguins return six members of the 2024 squad – Lorena Cedeno, Claudia Coombes, Line Greyling, Julia Marko, Lili Minich and Yeseniia Ovcharova. New players for the 2024-25 season include Ghada Dirninger, Yoana Dudova, Lydia Foster and Sarah Partida Garcia.
Last fall, Marko won nine singles matches in tournament play while Cedeno won eight times and Ovcharova won seven contests. Last year, Marko led the team with 19 singles wins while Cedeno finished with 18 victories. Marko won her final seven completed matches of the year while Minich won her last six.
This fall, YSU is slated to play in six tournaments, four of which will be in Ohio. The Guins play at the Toledo Rocket Invitational next week.
