The Youngstown State women's tennis team opens Horizon League play on Saturday morning when they play host to Cleveland State at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m.
The Penguins concluded non-league play with a pair of wins and enter the contest with the Vikings with a 7-9 overall record. Cleveland State is 5-12 this season with wins in two of its last three matches.
After a 2-0 performance last week, Hanna Telzynska was named the Horizon League singles player of the week. Telzynska and Yoana Dudova were tabbed the HL Doubles Team of the Week after collecting a pair of victories.
The Penguins and Vikings last met in the championship match of the Horizon League Championships last year. YSU picked up a 4-1 victory to advance to the NCAAs. The Vikings won the regular season match by a 4-3 decision.
This will be the Vikings' first trip to Youngstown since April 1, 2023. The previous two regular season meetings were played in Cleveland.
This spring, Lorena Cedeno leads the team with nine singles wins while Telzynska ranks second with eight victories. Dudova and Telzynska are 9-4 in doubles, including an 8-3 mark at No. 1.
Last year, Cedeno was 5-0 in Horizon League play while Yeseniia Ovcharova was 5-1 and Dudova was 4-1. Three Penguins from last year's league lineup – Lili Minich, Julia Marko and Ghada Dirninger. Those three were a combined 12-6 in league contests.
Telzynska will be making her HL debut while Partida and Greyling did not play in singles during conference the slate.
Cedeno has won her last eight straight HL regular-season singles contests dating back to April 7, 2024. Ovcharova is 11-1 all-time in HL singles contests.Â
