The Youngstown State women's tennis team plays for at least a share of the Horizon League regular season title when it visits Oakland on Sunday afternoon. First serve against the Golden Grizzlies at 4:30 p.m. at the Bloomfield Health and Tennis Club.
The Penguins are 4-1 in Horizon League play entering the contest and are tied with Cleveland State. Both CSU and YSU play at Oakland this weekend. Chicago State is 3-1 and can also earn a share of the league title with two wins. The Cougars play at IUPUI and Northern Kentucky this weekend.
A piece of the title will mark the fifth time that YSU has been regular-season champs, all coming since 2015.
After dropping their league opening contest to Cleveland State, the Guins have won four straight contests. YSU beat NKU and IUPUI at home last weekend.
In Horizon League play, the Guins have been strong in singles matches posting a 21-9 record. Julia Marko and Yeseniia Ovcharova are each 5-0 while Lili Minich sports a 4-1 record. Elinor Beazley has added three singles wins as well.
YSU won the outright league regular-season title in 2023 and is looking to repeat as champions. The Guins also won regular-season conference crowns in 2018, 2017 and 2015. Youngstown State shared titles in 2018 and 2017. YSU was the sole champion in 2023 and 2015.
The Horizon League tournament starts next Friday at West Lafayette, Ind., at Purdue University.
