Soccer Announces Seven Signees

Youngstown, Ohio – Youngstown State women's soccer head coach Brian Shrum has announced the signing of seven recruits to National Letters of Intent.

The Penguins signed Madison Bazylewicz , Marlen Hernandez, Emiko Kenney, Kate Makkas, Hanna Wahib, Teagan Wahle, and Leah Weiland.

Bazylewicz is from Farmindale, N.Y., and was an honorable mention all-county pick and scored three career goals with three career assists as a defender.

"Madison is a prototypical center-back. She has the size and strength to win tackles and regain possession," said Shrum. "Maddi also can begin attacks and get balls into our forwards from distance. She will be asked to come in and work towards a position on the back line right away."

Hernandez is a goalkeeper from Austin, Texas.

"Marlen is a tremendous shot-stopper," Shrum said. "She is fearless in front of the goal regardless of the situation. The most exceptional aspect of Marlen's game is her ability to begin the attacks from the goalkeeper position. She has the ability to play the ball long in behind the opposition or switch the point of attack from back passes. Marlen will be asked to come in and work towards the starting role immediately."

Kenney is midfielder that hails from Herndon, Va.

"Emiko is a competent ball handler in midfield," Shrum said. "She has the dribbling abilities to beat players in 1v1 situations and the instincts to play the deeper pass to get in behind the defense. She is always in a support position to allow the ball to move through her to connect the lines in the attack. Emiko will be asked to help our midfield continue to strong presence will built in 2023."

Makkas is an outside midfielder and a native of Dayton, Ohio.

"Kate is a strong wide player that loves to go 1v1." Shrum said. "She has adapted her game to becoming a creative winger. She is an aggressive dribbler and can deliver services into the box with both feet. Kate has an unmatched work ethic that will fit well with our current team culture."

Wahib, a native of Canfield, Ohio, was a two-time first-team all-district choice and scored 30 goals, 21 assists in 2023. A two-time first-team all-conference selection, she posted 52 career goals, 31 career assists

"Hanna is a fast-wide player who can get in behind the opposition's back line with her speed and quick changes of direction," Shrum said. "She is crafty with the ball and loves to get into goal-scoring positions. Hanna is also good in the area from corner kicks and loves to score with her head."

Weiland, from Butler, Pa., scored 36 goals with 27 assists during her Butler High School career. She also scored 11 goals with 11 assists in 2023.

"Leah is a wonderful athlete and a tireless worker on the field," Shrum said. "Leah demonstrates all the characteristics of a player who can play any role when asked. Leah will be asked to play as a full-back to get up in the attacks as well as defend in wide areas 1v1. Her stamina and never-give-up attitude will fit right in with our team."

Wahle, who is from Leander, Texas, Scored eight goals, seven assists in 2023 for Leander High School. She was also a first-team all-district and all-region.

"Teagan is hard noised defender with the soft touches of an attacking player," Shrum said. "She has the ability to connect the lines, pass the ball over distance, and advance the ball on the dribble. She will be asked to contribute in the midfield from the start."
