The Youngstown State women's tennis team takes to the court for the first time in the fall season playing at the three-day Michigan State Invitational which starts on Friday. The tournament will be held at MSU's Outdoor Tennis Courts.
The Penguins return their entire squad from the 2021-22 campaign the culminated with a Horizon League postseason championship. The Guins captured the league title with a thrilling 4-3 win over Milwaukee and advanced to the NCAA Regionals to face Virginia for the second time in school history.
YSU was led by a trio of first-year performers last year. Lili Minich, Elisa Rigazio and Julia Marko played key roles in the Penguins' success. Minich earned clinching wins in the two HL postseason matches, while Marko and Rigazio tied for the team lead with 22 singles wins.
Senior Cecilia Rosas returns at the top of the lineup. Rosas won 17 total singles contests, including 12 dual singles matches, last year. She earned first-team All-Horizon League honors in her second year with the program.
Jessica Stanmore and Eliska Masarikova each posted 12 wins a year ago while Maria Oliveria had nine wins, with eight coming in fall tournaments.
Later this fall, YSU has tournaments at Cleveland State, Toledo and CSUN on the docket. The Penguins will also play in the ITA Midwest Regionals which are in Ann Arbor, Mich., on Oct. 20-22.
