YSU Sets Passing TD Record in Win Over Dayton, 49-16

The Youngstown State football team set the single-game passing touchdown record and senior Jaleel McLaughlin moved into 10th-place on the NCAA all-time rushing yards list in the Penguins' 49-16 victory over Dayton at Stambaugh Stadium on Saturday.

The Penguins improve to 2-0 while Dayton falls to 1-1.

Sophomore Demeatric Crenshaw tied the individual single mark with five touchdown passes while junior Mitch Davidson added the record-breaker.

Crenshaw, who completed 11-of-17 attempts for a career-high 230 yards, threw four of his touchdowns to four different receivers in the first half. He also threw for 153 yards before halftime.

McLaughlin rushed for 129 yards on 13 carries and had a 52-yard touchdown reception, the first of his career.

Junior receiver Bryce Oliver caught two touchdowns and finished with 63 receiving yards. Redshirt freshman Max Tomczak netted 92 yards receiving and scored his first career touchdown.

Defensively, senior Quincy Lenton grabbed an interception and netted five tackles on the day, including two-and-a-half for loss. Sophomore defensive end Dawan Martin sacked Dayton's quarterback Dante Casciola twice and had five tackles, including two-for-loss.

For the Flyers, Casciola scored two touchdowns, one on the ground and one in the air, and finished with 134 passing yards.

The Penguins dominated the first quarter on both offense and defense. YSU found the end zone three times and kept Dayton scoreless going into quarter two.

The Guins held the Flyers to a three-and-out on their first possession. On the Penguins' opening drive, Crenshaw connected with Latrell Fordham for a three-yard touchdown with 9:28 left in the first quarter to put the Penguins up 7-0.

On Dayton's next drive, Lenton intercepted Casciola to give the Penguins possession at the Dayton 35-yard line. YSU found the end zone for the second time in five minutes when Crenshaw connected with Oliver at the goal for a 17-yard score and a 14-0 lead.

The Penguins defense held Dayton to another three-and-out before McLaughlin raced 52 yards on a reception from Crenshaw to give the Penguins a 21-0 lead going into the second quarter.

On the following possession, a YSU fumble in its own territory led to a 34-yard field goal by Dayton's Sam Webster with 10:53 remaining in the half to cut the lead down to 21-3.

Crenshaw connected with Tomczak for a 33-yard gain to get into Flyer territory and then found him wide open for a 27-yard touchdown with 9:31 to play in the half and a 28-3 lead.

Dayton found the end zone for the first time when Casciola connected with Jake Chisholm for an eight-yard touchdown pass to trim the YSU lead to 28-10 with 5:04 left in the second quarter.

YSU and Dayton exchanged possessions to open the second half. Then, two sacks in a row by the Penguin defense forced Dayton to punt from their own nine. With great field position, McLaughlin let loose on a 46-yard touchdown run to put the Penguins up 25, 35-10, heading into the fourth quarter.

With 8:08 remaining in the game, Casciola ran four yards into the endzone for the Flyer's first rushing touchdown of the day. Dayton went for two, but was unsuccessful, making the score 35-16.

The Penguins answered when Crenshaw hit Oliver with a 30-yard touchdown strike, giving the Penguins a 42-16 lead heading into the final minutes of the game.

After a Troy Jakubec interception, Davidson connected with Luke Hensley for an 18-yard touchdown to make the final score 49-16.

The Penguins are next in action as they travel to face Kentucky on Saturday in Lexington, Ky. Kickoff is set for noon at Kroger Field.
