The Youngstown State football team wrapped up spring drills on a warm and windy Saturday morning at Stambaugh Stadium.
The defense put together a solid all-around effort to take the scrimmage by a score of 29-23.
The offense came out and scored on its first possession of the scrimmage. QB Beau Brungard drove the unit 80 yards on nine plays in 4:23. The drive was capped off on a three-yard scoring toss to newcomer Dorian Williams.
After back-to-back stops, the offense moved into field goal range and Andrew Lastovka came on to kick a 36-yarder.
Brungard led a second touchdown drive of 70 yards in eight plays as he found Jeremiah Sanders with a nice diving grab from three outs out.
Just before halftime, the offense picked up another touchdown. Brungard found Austin Bray for 29-yard touchdown capping off a 70-play drive that took 10 plays.
On the first drive of the second half, QB Shane Cole led an impressive 70-yard march. Cole connected on back to back passes to Zion Neal for 40 yards. After Neal rushed the ball to the three-yard line, Da'Shaun Whatley scored on a two-yard run, two plays later for the offense's final score.
For the defense, lineman Justin Thomas had a scoop-and-score on a fumble by Zebulin Kinsey. Kinsey dropped back and the ball slipped out of his hands. Thomas picked up the ball at the 20 and rumbled in for a score.
Late in the practice, defensive back Ross Davidson made one-handed interception along the sidelines. Nick Bowser led the unit with two sacks. The QB's were not live during the scrimmage.
Brungard was 20-of-30 for 314 yards and two touchdowns. Cole led the reserves completing six passes for 61 yards. Brungard rushed for 55 yards on seven carries. Cole had 27 yards on four carries, Tahir Mills had 24 yards on five rushes and Whatley had 23 yards on six totes. Williams had six receptions for 61 yards and newcomer Lynn Wyche-El had four catches for 57 yards.
The Penguins open the season on August 27 when they play host to Mercyhurst at Stambaugh Stadium.
