The Youngstown State baseball team earned a doubleheader split against UIC on Friday with an 8-3 victory in game one at Curtis Granderson Stadium.
After dropping game two of Friday's doubleheader 7-3, Youngstown State is now 16-32 overall and 9-14 in Horizon League play while UIC is 21-21 overall and 13-8 in league action.
Game 1 Recap
The Youngstown State baseball team scored eight unanswered runs after falling behind 3-0 to earn a 8-3 victory at UIC in game one of a Horizon League doubleheader on Friday at Curtis Granderson Stadium.
The Flames struck for three runs in the home half of the first inning before the Penguins scored the final eight runs of the seven-inning contest.
Matt Brosky earned the complete game victory after allowing three runs on 10 hits and matching his career high with 10 strikeouts over seven innings. The junior right-hander allowed three runs on five hits in the bottom of the first before settling in to blank the Flames over their final six at bats.
Lucas Nasonti went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI while
Braeden O'Shaughnessy was 2-for-4 with an RBI single and a stolen base.
Andre Good went 2-for-3 with an RBI double and two runs scored while
Padraig O'Shaughnessy hit a two-run home run.
Dylan Swarmer recorded a two-run single and
Turner Grau notched an RBI single. The Penguins outhit the Flames 11-10 for the contest.
UIC grabbed an early lead with three runs on five hits in the bottom of the first inning. Ryan Lin-Peistrup hit a leadoff single, Bryan Rosario walked and Cole Conn singled to load the bases with nobody out. Breck Nowik followed with a two-run single to center field and Rayth Peterson added an RBI single to give the Flames a 3-0 lead.
YSU cut UIC's lead to 3-2 in the top of the second inning when Good hit a leadoff infield single and
Padraig O'Shaughnessy followed with a two-run home run to right field.
The Penguins then scored four runs on four hits and an error in the top of the third inning to take a 6-3 advantage. Nasonti hit a leadoff double and
Braeden O'Shaughnessy hit a one-out RBI single to even the score at 3-3. Later in the frame, Swarmer delivered a two-out, two-run single with the bases loaded and Grau followed with an RBI single to give YSU a three-run cushion.
Youngstown State increased its lead to 7-3 in the top of the sixth when Grau drew a one-out walk, advanced to second on a groundout and scored on a two-out RBI single by Nasonti.
The Penguins added another insurance run in the top of the seventh when
Steven D'Eusanio hit a two-out infield single and Good followed with an RBI double to left center to produce the final margin of 8-3.
Lin-Peistrup and Conn each had two hits to pace the Flames offensively.
UIC starter Nate Peterson suffered the loss after surrendering seven runs on eight hits and striking out six batters over 5.1 innings of work. Ryan Smith was responsible for one run on three hits in 1.2 innings of relief.
Game 2 Recap
The Youngstown State baseball team dropped a 7-3 decision to UIC in game two of Friday's doubleheader at Curtis Granderson Stadium.
The Flames plated three runs in the bottom of the second inning and one run in the third to build a 4-0 lead before the Penguins cut the lead in half with two runs in the top of the fourth. UIC scored a single run in the home half of the seventh before YSU answered with a run of its own in the top of the eighth. The Flames added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth to pull away for the 7-3 triumph.
Dylan Swarmer went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run while
Dominick Bucko and Good also had two hits apiece. In addition,
Padraig O'Shaughnessy doubled and drove in a run. Each team recorded nine hits in the contest.
YSU starter
Lane Rhodes took the loss after allowing three runs on three hits and striking out two batters in two innings on the mound.
Brandon Mikos was responsible for one run on three hits in 1.2 innings of relief while
Nick Perez allowed one run on one hit in two innings of work.
Casey Marshalwitz surrendered two runs on one hit without recording an out. The Penguins used eight different pitchers in the ballgame.
UIC scored three runs on three hits in the bottom of the second inning to take an early lead. Garrett McCarthy started the scoring off with an RBI single and Adam Weed followed with a two-run double down the right field line to give the Flames a 3-0 advantage.
UIC pushed its lead to 4-0 in the home half of the third inning when Rosario hit a leadoff double, stole third and scored on an RBI single by Conn.
YSU cut UIC's lead in half at 4-2 in the top of the fourth inning when Good hit a one-out double and Swarmer delivered a two-out, two-run blast to left field.
The Flames increased their lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning when Rosario drew a leadoff walk and scored on a one-out RBI double by Nowik.
The Penguins shaved the Flames' lead to 5-3 with one run in the top of the eighth inning. D'Eusanio was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on a single by Good and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Padraig O'Shaughnessy.
UIC added some insurance in the bottom of the eighth inning when Lin-Peistrup delivered a two-run single to put the Flames ahead 7-3.
Weed went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead UIC offensively. He was one of eight different Flames to record a hit in the contest.
UIC starter Tyler Ingram earned the victory after allowing two runs on seven hits and fanning seven batters over 6.1 innings. Jeff Zack was charged with one run on two hits in 1.2 innings of relief while Tanner Shears came on to work a scoreless ninth inning.
Youngstown State will play a Horizon League doubleheader at Northern Kentucky on Sunday beginning at noon. Both games will be broadcast live on YSNLive.com.
