Good's Ninth-Inning Home Run Lifts Penguins to 3-2 Win at UTRGV

Box Score

Andre Good's solo home run in the top of the ninth inning broke a 2-2 tie and lifted the Youngstown State baseball team to a 3-2 victory over UT Rio Grande Valley in Sunday's series finale at UTRGV Baseball Stadium in Edinburg, Texas.

The Penguins snapped a seven-game losing streak to improve to 3-8 overall while UTRGV had its three-game winning streak halted and fell to 8-4 overall.

UTRGV jumped ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first before YSU answered with two runs in the top of the second. The Vaqueros tied the game at 2-2 with a run in the third, and the score remained the same until the top of the ninth. Good hit a 1-2 pitch from UTRGV reliever Jesus Aldaz over the wall in left field to lead off the top of the ninth and give the Penguins the lead for good.

Nathan Ball came on in the bottom half of the ninth and retired the side in order to earn his third save of the season. Casey Marshalwitz was awarded his first victory of the season after coming on to record the final out of the eighth inning. Kenny Misik retired the only two batters he faced in the eighth inning.

YSU starter Matt Brosky allowed two runs, one of them earned, on five hits and struck out six batters over seven innings in another quality outing. After giving up an RBI single in the third inning, Brosky did not allow another hit until a one-out single in the seventh. He recorded a strikeout in four different frames, and he retired the side in order in the fourth.

Dylan Swarmer went 2-for-4 with a two-run single and he threw out three runners attempting to steal from his catcher position. Good, Steven D'Eusanio and Lucas Nasonti also had hits for the Penguins as UTRGV outhit YSU 6-5.

Brandon Pimentel hit a one-out solo home run in the bottom of the first inning to give UTRGV a 1-0 lead.

YSU answered with two runs on two hits in the top of the second inning. Padraig O'Shaughnessy drew a leadoff walk, D'Eusanio followed with a single and Good walked to load the bases with nobody out. Swarmer then delivered a two-run single through the left side to put the Penguins in front 2-1.

The Vaqueros evened the score at 2-2 with one unearned run on one hit and an error in the bottom of the third inning. Alex Kelch reached on an error to begin the inning, and he came around to score on an RBI single by Bryan Sturges.

UTRGV starter JC Ariza allowed two runs on two hits and fanned three batters over three innings of work. Justin Butz, Ricky Gerik Jr., Zach Tjelmeland and Max Balderrama Jr. combined to allow two hits over five scoreless innings of relief before Aldaz surrendered Good's homer in the ninth.

Youngstown State will continue its early-season road stretch on Friday when it begins a four-game series at New Orleans. First pitch for Friday's series opener is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.
