Box Score Michigan State scored seven runs over the first two innings on its way to a 12-5 victory over the Youngstown State baseball team on Wednesday at McLane Stadium at Kobs Field.
The Penguins fall to 9-15 overall on the season while the Spartans improve to 12-10.
Michigan State scored three times in the first inning before YSU plated a single run in the second. The Spartans answered with four runs in the home half of the second before the Penguins scored twice in the third and twice in the fifth to pull within 7-5. MSU added single runs in the fifth and sixth and three runs in the eighth to produce the final tally.
Padraig O'Shaughnessy went 2-for-4 with a double and his second home run of the season while Andre Good recorded a two-run double and three RBIs. Steven D'Eusanio drove in a run and scored a run while Braeden O'Shaughnessy singled, walked twice and scored twice.
YSU starter Nick Perez suffered the loss after allowing seven runs, three of them earned, on five hits and three walks over 1.2 innings. Brandon Matthews was responsible for one run on three hits and struck out a pair of batters over a season-high three innings.
Kenny Misik retired the only batter he faced in the fifth inning while Chad Coles allowed one run and fanned two batters in the sixth. Alex Cardona worked a scoreless seventh inning before Lane Rhodes allowed a pair of runs in the eighth. Nathan Ball was charged with one run on three hits in a third of an inning while Casey Marshalwitz struck out the only two batters he faced.
The Spartans scored three runs on two hits in the bottom of the first inning to grab an early lead. Christian Williams and Jack Frank hit back-to-back RBI singles and Zaid Walker drove home a run with a sacrifice fly to give MSU a 3-0 edge.
The Penguins cut Michigan State's lead to 3-1 in the top of the second inning when Padraig O'Shaughnessy hit a one-out solo home run.
Michigan State pushed its lead to 7-1 with four runs on three hits and an error in the home half of the second inning. Bryan Broecker hit a two-out single and came around to score on an error. Later in the frame, Mitch Jebb delivered a three-run double to give the Spartans a six-run advantage.
Youngstown State plated two runs on two hits in the top of the third inning. Lucas Nasonti drew a leadoff walk and came around to score on an RBI single by D'Eusanio. Later in the inning, Braeden O'Shaughnessy scored on a fielder's choice to cut MSU's lead to 7-3.
The Penguins drew closer with two runs on one hit in the top of the fifth inning. Braeden O'Shaughnessy and D'Eusanio drew back-to-back one-out walks and both scored on a two-out, two-run double by Good to shave the Spartans' lead to 7-5.
The Spartans responded by scoring once on two hits in the bottom of the fifth. Sam Busch drew a one-out walk and came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Broecker to push MSU's advantage to 8-5. Michigan State increased its lead to 9-5 in the bottom of the sixth when Frank hit a one-out solo home run to left center field.
MSU plated three runs on four hits in the bottom of the eighth to push its lead to 12-5. Peter Ahn drew a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on an RBI double by Williams. Frank followed with an RBI double of his own and scored on an RBI single by Jebb.
Michigan State starter Aidan Arbaugh allowed three runs on four hits and three walks over two innings while Wyatt Rush was responsible for two runs on two hits in three innings of relief. Andrew Carson was awarded the victory after working two scoreless innings while Kyle Dunning and Dominic Hann each worked a scoreless frame.
Williams and Frank each had three hits to pace the Spartans offensively. Jebb went 2-for-4 with a double and four RBIs while Frank recorded three RBIs. MSU outhit YSU 14-9 for the contest.
Youngstown State will return to Horizon League play on Friday when it opens a three-game series at Oakland. First pitch for Friday's series opener is set for 2:30 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ and YSNLive.com.
