Penguins Drop Both Games of Doubleheader at West Virginia

The Youngstown State baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against West Virginia on Friday at Wagener Field at Monongalia County Ballpark.

The Penguins dropped game one 9-3 before falling 13-2 in game two. The Mountaineers completed the three-game series sweep after winning the series opener 6-4 on Thursday.

Youngstown State falls to 9-14 overall on the season while West Virginia improves to 13-8.

Game 1 Recap

West Virginia scored seven runs over its final four at bats to pull away for a 9-3 victory over the Youngstown State baseball team in game one of Friday's doubleheader at Wagener Field at Monongalia County Ballpark.

The Mountaineers jumped ahead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning before the Penguins plated a run in the top of the fourth. WVU scored two more runs in the fifth to go up 4-1 before YSU scored once in the sixth to make it a two-run game. West Virginia scored twice in the fifth, once in the sixth and four times in the seventh to open up a 9-2 advantage. YSU scored once in the top of the eighth to produce the final tally.

Lucas Nasonti went 2-for-3 with a double and a home run while scoring all three of YSU's runs. Dylan Swarmer went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles while Chase Franken and Braeden O'Shaughnessy each drove in a run. Franken recorded the first hit and the first RBI of his career.

YSU starter Chad Coles took the loss after allowing seven runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and five walks over 6.1 innings. Brandon Matthews was responsible for two runs on one hit over 1.2 innings of relief.

West Virginia grabbed an early lead with two runs on two hits and three walks in the bottom of the first inning. JJ Wetherholt reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to third on a double by Victor Scott II and scored on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Scott II was able to score from third on a failed pickoff attempt to give WVU a 2-0 lead.

YSU cut WVU's lead in half with one run two hits in the top of the fourth inning. Nasonti hit a one-out double and scored on a two-out RBI single by O'Shaughnessy.

The Mountaineers extended their advantage to three with two runs on two hits in the home half of the fifth inning. Scott II hit a two-out single and Grant Hussey followed with a two-run home run down the right field line to push WVU's lead to 4-1.

The Penguins pulled within 4-2 when Nasonti hit his first home run of the season in the top of the sixth inning.

West Virginia got the run back in the bottom of the sixth when Braden Barry hit a one-out triple and scored on a bunt single by Mikey Kluska to put WVU ahead 5-2.

WVU extended its lead to 7-2 in the bottom of the seventh when Scott II drew a one-out walk and Hussey followed with his second two-run home run of the game. Later in the frame, Evan Smith drew a one-out walk and scored on a triple by Vince Ippoliti. Tyler Cox then brought home Ippoliti with a sacrifice fly to make it a 9-2 WVU lead.

YSU scored its third and final run in the top of the eighth when Nasonti drew a two-out walk and Franken followed with an RBI double to right center field.

WVU starter Ben Hampton earned the win after allowing two runs on six hits and fanning five batters over seven innings of work.

Hussey, Scott II and Ippoliti each had two hits to pace the Mountaineers offensively. Hussey went 2-for-4 with a pair of two-run home runs and four RBIs.

Game 2 Recap

West Virginia scored six runs over the first three innings and went on to earn a 13-2 victory over the Youngstown State baseball team in game two of Saturday's doubleheader at Wagener Field at Monongalia County Ballpark.

The Mountaineers scored twice in the first, once in the second and three times in the third to build a six-run advantage. The Penguins scored twice in the sixth before WVU answered with seven runs in the home half of the inning.

WVU starter Jacob Watters did not allow a hit and struck out five batters over five scoreless innings to earn the victory. He retired 11 of the first 12 batters he faced.

YSU starter Matt Brosky suffered the loss after allowing six runs, only two of them earned, on three hits over 2.2 innings. Brosky was one of seven pitchers to appear in the contest for the Penguins.

Nasonti singled and scored a run while O'Shaughnessy registered an RBI triple and a run scored.

West Virginia scored two runs on one hit in the bottom of the first inning to take an early edge. Wetherholt reached on a one-out bunt single, stole second, stole third and scored on a throwing error. In addition, Scott II drew a one-out walk and scored on a sacrifice fly by Hussey to put WVU in front 2-0.

The Mountaineers scored once in the home half of the second inning to push their lead to 3-0. Smith hit a one-out single, advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt, stole third and scored on an RBI groundout by Kluska.

WVU pushed its lead to 6-0 with three runs on two hits and three errors in the bottom of the third inning. Austin Davis hit a leadoff single and came around to score on error. Later in the frame, Ippoliti delivered an RBI single and eventually scored on an error.

YSU got on the board with two runs on two hits in the top of the sixth inning. Nasonti hit a leadoff single and O'Shaughnessy followed with an RBI triple to right center field. Andre Good then drove home O'Shaughnessy when he reached on a fielder's choice to cut WVU's lead to 6-2.

The Mountaineers answered immediately with seven runs on three hits in the home half of the sixth to go up 13-2. Wetherholt hit a three-run double and Smith recorded a two-run double during the rally.

Wetherholt and Smith each had two hits for WVU as the Mountaineers outhit the Penguins 8-3. The Mountaineers stole 11 bases in the game.

Youngstown State will play at Michigan State on Wednesday at 4:05 p.m. before opening a three-game Horizon League series at Oakland on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
