Box Score The Youngstown State baseball team earned its first victory over a Big Ten opponent since 1996 with a 2-1 win over Penn State on Tuesday at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
The Penguins, who have now won two straight and seven of their last 10 games, improved to 9-11 overall while Penn State falls to 7-11.
Youngstown State picked up its second win over a Power Five opponent this season after defeating Pitt 5-2 on Wednesday. The Penguins snapped a five-game losing streak to Penn State and earned their first win over the Nittany Lions since 1991. YSU's last win over a Big Ten opponent was an 11-9 triumph at Ohio State on April 10, 1996.
With the game tied at 1-1 in the top of the ninth inning, Braeden O'Shaughnessy hit a leadoff single, advanced to third on a pair of passed balls and scored on a wild pitch to give the Penguins the 2-1 advantage.
Alex Cardona earned his first win as a Penguin after striking out three batters over 1.1 scoreless innings of relief. Nathan Ball retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth to collect his fifth save of the season.
Cardona entered the game with two outs and a runner on first base in the bottom of the seventh inning. After an error put two runners aboard, Cardona struck out Anthony Steele to end the threat and send the game to the eighth. After allowing a leadoff single in the bottom of the eighth, Cardona struck out Jay Harry and Ian Francis threw out Billy Gerlott attempting to steal second. The Boardman, Ohio, native then struck out Tayven Kelley to end the inning and keep the game tied at 1-1.
Penn State jumped in front by scoring one run on two hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. Gerlott hit a leadoff double and came around to score on a one-out RBI single by Kelley to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 edge.
Youngstown State evened the score at 1-1 with a run in the top of the sixth inning. Lucas Nasonti hit a one-out double down the left field line, stole third and scored when O'Shaughnessy reached on a two-out error.
Andre Good went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles, Nasonti doubled and scored a run and O'Shaughnessy singled and scored the go-ahead run in the ninth. Dylan Swarmer added a single as the Penguins were outhit by Penn State 7-5.
YSU starter Nick Perez allowed one run on five hits over 4.2 innings while Kenny Misik had a strikeout in two thirds of an inning. Brandon Matthews did not allow a hit over 1.1 scoreless innings of relief.
Mason Mellott suffered the loss for the Nittany Lions after allowing one unearned run on one hit over 1.2 innings of relief. Mellott was one of six Penn State pitchers who appeared in the contest.
Gerlott and Johnny Piacentino each had two hits to pace the Nittany Lions offensively.
Youngstown State will face another Power Five opponent when it begins a three-game weekend series at Big 12-member West Virginia on Friday at 6:30 p.m. All three games of the series will be broadcast live on ESPN+ and YSNLive.com.
