Snyder Shines as Penguins Open Horizon League Play with 4-0 Win Over Mastodons

Jon Snyder allowed just one hit and had a season-high 10 strikeouts over 6.1 innings to lead the Youngstown State baseball team to a 4-0 victory in its Horizon League opener against Purdue Fort Wayne on Friday at Mastodon Field.

The Penguins, who have now won two straight and five of their last seven games, improve to 7-10 overall and 1-0 in Horizon League play while Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 1-16 overall and 0-1 in league action. YSU won its Horizon League opener for the second straight season and for just the second time since 2013.

Snyder was masterful on the mound as he did not allow a hit until a one-out single in the bottom of the sixth inning. He retired the first six batters he faced and he faced the minimum in each of the first five frames. The senior right-hander retired the side in order in the first, second and fifth innings. The Springboro, Ohio, native recorded a strikeout in six different innings, and he had multiple punchouts in four different frames as he earned his first victory of the season.

Chad Coles came on to record the final two outs of the seventh inning before Casey Marshalwitz worked a scoreless bottom of the eighth. Nathan Ball retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth to secure the series-opening victory.

Seth Lucero went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI singles, two stolen bases and a run scored to lead the Penguins offensively. Andre Good, Dylan Swarmer and Ian Francis each recorded a base hit and scored a run as YSU outhit Purdue Fort Wayne 7-3. Braeden O'Shaughnessy, who has now hit safely in six straight games, delivered an RBI single in top of the ninth.

The Penguins jumped in front with two runs on two hits in the top of the third inning. Swarmer drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and reached third on a single by Francis. After Lucero brought home Swarmer with an RBI single to right field, Francis stole home when Lucero swiped second to give YSU a 2-0 lead.

YSU pushed its lead to 3-0 with one run on two hits in the top of the fourth. Good hit a leadoff single and came around to score on a two-out RBI single by Lucero.

Youngstown State added an insurance run in the top of the ninth as Lucero hit a leadoff single and came around to score on a one-out RBI single by Braeden O'Shaughnessy to produce the final tally of 4-0.

Purdue Fort Wayne starter Rex Stills took the loss after allowing two runs on two hits over 2.1 innings while Michael Madura was responsible for one run on two hits in 2.2 innings of relief. Brian Skelton tossed two scoreless innings of relief while JD Deany surrendered one run over two innings of work.

Cade Fitzpatrick had two of Purdue Fort Wayne's three singles in the contest.

The Penguins and Mastodons will continue their three-game Horizon League series on Saturday at 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on YSNLive.com.
