Las Vegas, Nevada - The Youngstown State women's tennis team earned a 5-2 win over UTEP on Friday afternoon at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Penguins (1-1) earned their first win in program history against the Miners (1-3).
YSU took control of the match by taking the doubles point. At No. 1, Cecilia Rosas and Julia Marko picked up a hard-fought 7-5 win over Thassane Abrahim and Veronika Lebisova. At No. 3, Eliska Masarikova and Elisa Rigazio knocked off Eve Daniels and Elena Dibattista by a score of 6-2. At No. 2, Lili Minich and Stanmore won 6-2.
In singles play, YSU earned wins at No. 1, No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 singles. The Guins picked up three wins in straight sets.
At No. 2, Masarikova won 6-2, 6-3 against Dibattista. In action at No. 4, Jessica Stanmore beat Laura Schmitz, 6-1, 6-4. Rigazio improved to 2-0 on the season with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Lina Sachica.
At No. 1, Rosas earned a 6-4, 3-6, 10-6 win over Kathleen Percegona.
YSU returns to action on Saturday when it takes on Weber State. First serve is set for 1 p.m. Eastern/10 a.m. Pacific time.
