Track & Field Wraps Up Hurricane Alumni Invitational, Sets Three School Records on Day Two

CORAL GABLES, Florida – Led by three school records set, the Youngstown State wrapped up an impressive showing on the final day of the Miami (Fl.) Hurricane Alumni Invitational, April 10.

Sean Peterson uplifted former-Penguins' standout Kurt Michaelis' record of 1:50.42 in the 800m run, clocking a 1:50.12 en route to the event victory. Michaelis' record stood for 19 years, being posted at the 2002 N.C. State Raleigh Relays.

Eclipsing her own school record of 4758 pts. set at the 2019 Horizon League Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Olivia Jones set a new school record in the women's heptathlon with a total of 4865 pts. Olivia's efforts earned her a third-place finish in the event.

The women's 4x100 team comprised of Kyndia Matlock, Jahniya Bowers, Teneisha Myers and Jaliyah Elliott clocked a new school record in the event, posting a 45.51 in the race to earn a second-place finish. The squad's time breaks the previous school record of 45.77 set in 2018 at the Westminster Invitational by the quad of Thompkins, Burts, Myers and Elliott.

Field Highlights
Zach Gehm took the gold in the men's discus throw with a 53.65m mark, earning the first event victory of the day for YSU and his third of the season. With the performance, Zach has secured back-to-back victories in the discus throw event with the win last week at the Northeast Ohio Quad.

Adding to his day Gehm clinched a top-3 finish in the men's shot put, posting a 15.89m throw on his fith and final attempt.

Within the women's heptathlon, Olivia Jones finished atop the standings in the javelin throw, posting a personal-best 42.39m mark on her second attempt. Fellow teammate Emily Bee also improved her personal-best, adding a 32.22m throw to finish fourth in the event. Emily Bee earned a top-5 finish in the long jump with a mark of 5.42m. Just behind, teammate Olivia Jones finished seventh in the event with a 5.32m jump.

Jakari Lomax represented the Penguins' best finisher in the men's triple jump competition, posting a 15.14 mark to finish fourth in the event.

Running Highlights
Out of the blocks, Jaliyah Elliott earned an event victory in the women's 100m dash, posting a personal-best time of 11.52 - the second-fastest mark in YSU history. Teammates Jahniya Bowers (11.71) and Kyndia Matlock (11.82) also clocked personal-best times, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively.

On the men's side, Christian Ford (10.66) and Tobias Hayes (10.78) represented the Penguins' best finishers in the 100-meter dash, finishing fourth and sixth.

The men's 4x100 team consisting of Christian Ford, Collin Harden, Tobias Hayes and Jamynk Jackson clocked a season-best time of 41.84 en route to a runner-up finish in the event.

Adding to her impressive performance on the day, Jaliyah Elliott ran a 23.65 to earn the bronze in the women's 200m dash. Teammate Jahniya Bowers clocked a personal-best 24.21 to finish sixth.

Teneisha Myers clocked a 56.96 to post a top-8 finish in the women's 400m dash, edging out 5 entries.

Collin Harden posted a 52.35 in the men's 400m hurdles, tabbing the silver medal in the race. Teammate Ja-Van Poole clocked a personal-best 57.78 to finish ninth.

Morgan Cole tallied a personal-best mark in the women's 1500m run with a time of 4:40.34 and would go on to earn a top-3 finish, placing ahead of 11 total entries.

Behind Peterson, CJ Schumacher posted a personal-best 1:53.39 and would go on to finish third in the event.

The Penguins are back in action tomorrow at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Ed Fry Invitational. The meet begins with the women's hammer throw and rolling schedule of running events, starting with the 10000-meter run, at 10 a.m.
