Box Score The Youngstown State baseball team belted out 21 hits in a dominating 22-6 victory over St. Bonaventure on Sunday at Eastwood Field to win its third straight game and complete the series sweep.
The Penguins scored 22 runs and had at least 21 hits for the first time since they recorded 23 hits in a 22-8 win over Duquesne on April 7, 2010. YSU improves to 8-11 overall while St. Bonaventure falls to 0-3. After taking both games of a doubleheader on Saturday, the Penguins picked up their first series sweep since they won three games over UIC at Eastwood Field on March 30-31, 2018.
Blaze Glenn went 5-for-6 with three doubles, a walk, two RBIs and five runs scored. Glenn's five runs scored tied the single-game school record as he became the first Penguin since 2001 to score five runs in a game. The Toronto, Ohio, native also tied the single-game school record with three doubles. He became the first Penguin since 2010 to double three times in a game. Glenn's five hits were one shy of the school record as he became just the second Penguin since 2012 to record five hits in game. Dylan Swarmer also recorded five hits in a loss at Penn State on April 9, 2019.
Phillip Glasser, Andre Good, Turner Grau, Lucas Nasonti and Braeden O'Shaughnessy each had two hits as 12 different Penguins recorded a hit in the contest. Good notched a team-high four RBIs while Grau drove in three runs. YSU scored at least one run in each of its first seven at bats of the ballgame.
YSU starter Jon Snyder scattered four hits and struck out six batters over five scoreless innings to earn his second victory of the season. He recorded a strikeout in each of the five innings he was on the mound. Casey Marshalwitz allowed one run in one inning of work before Conner Johnson worked a scoreless seventh inning. Grant Kersh tossed a scoreless eighth inning before Nathan Ball allowed three runs on three walks in the ninth. Brandon Matthews was responsible for two runs on two hits while recording the final three outs of the game.
The Penguins jumped in front early with eight runs on five hits and five errors in the bottom of the first inning. Jeff Wehler scored on an error after he stole third for the first run of the game. Grau then delivered a two-run double and Glenn followed with a two-run single. After Glenn scored on an error, Nick Caruso scored on a wild pitch and Good hit an RBI single. YSU added four runs in the bottom of the second inning to push its lead to 12-0. Wehler walked with the bases loaded, Glasser was hit by a pitch in the next at bat and Good sent a two-run single to center field.
The Penguins pushed their advantage to 13-0 in the bottom of the third with an RBI single by Nasonti. The lead would swell to 15-0 in the bottom of the fourth when Grau hit an RBI single and Steven D'Eusanio scored on a wild pitch. Padraig O'Shaughnessy delivered a two-run single in the fifth to increase the edge to 17-0.
St. Bonaventure got on the board in the top of the sixth when Garrett Boldt was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Youngstown State responded by scoring three times in the home half of the sixth to push its lead to 20-1. Swarmer notched an RBI single, Nasonti hit an RBI double and Good brought home a run with a fielder's choice. The Penguins closed out their scoring with two runs in the seventh as Braeden O'Shaughnessy hit an RBI single and Glasser walked with the bases loaded.
The Bonnies scored five times on two hits and five walks in the top of the ninth to produce the final margin. Teddy Bishop recorded an RBI single, Jagger Nucci walked with the bases loaded and Christian Szablewski hit a three-run double down the left field line.
St. Bonaventure starter Andrew White took the loss after allowing 11 runs, six of them earned, on five hits over one inning. Murphy O'Brien allowed for runs on six hits over three innings while Luke Lashutka surrendered six runs on eight hits over 2.1 innings. Bryan Bizzaro was responsible for one run on two hits over 1.2 innings.
The Penguins will return to Horizon League play on Friday when they open a four-game series against preseason league favorite Wright State. First pitch at Eastwood Field is set for 5 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on YSNLive.com.
