Cleveland, Ohio - The Youngstown State women's tennis team used some strong momentum from winning the doubles point to win all six singles matches in a 7-0 victory over Cleveland State at the Medical Mutual Pavilion on Saturday afternoon.
The Penguins improve to 3-0 in Horizon League play with the win and are now 9-9 overall. CSU falls to 6-11 and 2-1. YSU ends the month of March on a four-match winning streak.
A strong rally at doubles gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead in the dual.
YSU rallied to win matches No. 3 and No. 2 after dropping the contest at No. 1. At No. 3, Ana Stroe and Anastasiia Khokhlova rallied for a 6-4 victory. At No. 2, YSU trailed 5-1 but a strong comeback by Noelly Longi Nsimba and Imaan Hassim tied the contest at 5-5 and forced a tiebreaker at 6-6. The Penguins took the doubles point as Nsimba and Hassim won 7-4 in the tiebreaker.
The momentum built from doubles carried on to the singles matches.
In singles, YSU won quickly at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 to claim the match.
At No. 3, Khokhlova won 6-2, 7-5 over CSU's Aleksandra Golawska. At No. 2, Sofia Macias defeated Gaby Schoenberg by a score of 6-2, 6-4. To clinch the match, Cassandra Morleja beat Anastasia Perin 6-4, 6-4.
Also winning in straight sets was Nsimba at No. 1 as she picked up a 6-4, 7-5 win over Isabella Spindler.
Winning in three sets were Hassim and Tamara Teufl. Teufl won the first set 6-4 over Blanche Lenoan before dropping the second 6-3. Teufl rebounded strong in the third to win 6-0. Hassim came back from a set down to win her match. She dropped a 7-5 opener to Jana Schober before winning the next two sets, 7-6 (2) and 10-8.
The Penguins are back in action next Saturday when they take on Oakland.
