Ann Arbor, Mich. - The Youngstown State women's tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 10 Michigan in the opening round of NCAA Regionals on a sunny Friday afternoon at the Michigan Varsity Tennis Center.
YSU ends the season with a 16-9 record, tying for the second most wins in school history. The Wolverines (22-5) advance to play Kentucky in the second round on Saturday.
The Penguins battled for nearly two hours before Michigan clinched the match.
At No. 2 doubles, Sofia Macias and Imaan Hassim led Chiara Lommer and Brieene Minor 5-2 (15-Love) before the Wolverines clinched the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3.
At singles play, YSU hung tough at all six spots in the lineup.
Senior Dominika Lackova, playing in her final YSU match, lost a 6-0, 6-1 decision to 26th-ranked Kate Fahey at No. 1. Senior Nehel Sahni dropped a 6-2, 6-1 contest to Alex Najarian.
The Wolverines clinched the dual meet victory at No. 3 as Macias dropped a 6-3, 6-4 bout with Alex Najarian.
At No. 2, Noelly Longi Nsimba hung tough with 24th-ranked Minor 6-1, 5-4, At No. 5, Hassim trailed 6-3, 5-1 to Mira Ruder-Hook. At No. 6, Cassandra Moraleja had four set points, but dropped a 7-6 (7-4) set to Annie Wierda. Wierda led 3-0 in the second set.
