Wright State scored five runs in the first inning and got outstanding pitching from Luke Mamer to defeat the Youngstown State baseball team 13-1 on Saturday afternoon at Nischwitz Stadium.

The Penguins, who won the series opener 6-5 on Friday evening, took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the first. Lorenzo Arcuri reached on an error, stole second and came in on a Josh Fitch single with two outs.

Wright State scored five runs on three hits, three walks and an error in the bottom of the inning, and that was more than enough for Mamer.

Mamer pitched seven innings in his second victory of the season, allowing five hits and walking one while striking out five.

The Raiders went up 6-1 with a run in the second, and they scored another run in the fifth, two in the sixth and four more in the eighth.

Joe King, making the first conference start of his career, was charged with six runs, four of which were earned, on five hits and three walks in 1.1 innings. D.J. Carr held the Raiders scoreless in his first two innings to give the Penguins a chance to cut into the lead, and his day ended with three runs against him. Brad Smith pitched the final 2.2 innings.

Frank Califano and Matt Sullivan both had a pair of hits for the Penguins, but the rest of the lineup accounted for just two hits. Mark Fowler and Michael Timm had three hits apiece, and Wright State got 11 hits from the top four spots in its lineup.

Youngstown State and Wright State will play to win the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
