Dayton, Ohio - The Youngstown State men's tennis team opened Horizon League play with a strong 6-1 win at Wright State at the Dayton Center Courts on Sunday.
The Penguins (5-9 overall and 1-0) capped a strong weekend with the win over the Raiders (7-11, 0-2) after defeating Dayton on Saturday.
The Guins won the double point to set the table for a strong win and then took wins in five of six singles matches.
In doubles play, Dawoud Kabli and Victor Pereira picked up a 6-3 win at No. 1 while Remi Chancerel and Silviu Mistreanu won a 6-4 decision at No. 2. The final match was tied four-all when YSU clinched the point.
Making his Horizon League debut, Chancerel cruised to a 6-4, 6-3 win over Lauri Makikalli at No. 1. Also victorious in his HL opener was Hugo Morth at No. 2 as he beat Dan Gilbert 7-6, 6-4.
YSU won at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 in three-set battles. At No. 4, Mistreanu won 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 over Marc Sodini, at No. 5, Kabli won 6-0, 5-7, 10-1 and at No. 6, Pereira earned a come-from-behind 5-7, 7-6, 10-4 win over Andrew Connolly.
The Raiders' Jose Pestana beat Bassem El Mekawi 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 for the lone WSU point.
YSU returns home to take on Detroit next Sunday at the Boardman Tennis Center. First serve is set for 9 a.m.
