Cleveland, Ohio – The Youngstown State men's tennis team won five of six singles contests to earn an important 5-2 win over Cleveland State on Friday night at Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion.
The Penguins improve to 12-3 overall and 3-0 in Horizon League play. The Vikings fall to 11-10 and 1-2. It's YSU's first win over the Vikings in Clevland since April 2022.
YSU trailed in the contest after dropping the doubles point. Cleveland State won 6-3 at No. 1 and 6-4 at No. 3 doubles to take the early advantage.
Malo Vernejoul was the first Penguins to earn a win, with a 6-3, 6-1 decision at No. 6 singles. After CSU took a 2-1 lead with a win at No. 1 singles, the Guins quickly grabbed a 3-2 advantage with wins at No. 3 and No. 5 singles.
At No. 3 singles, Dominik Vonbank earned a 6-4, 6-2 victory and at No. 5 singles, Oscar Gippet collected a 6-3, 6-4 win.
The last two remaining singles matches went three sets and ended almost an hour later, but fortunately both were wins of the Penguins.
Clinching the victory at Rafael Le Fur at No. 4 with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 triumph. The match concluded with a three-set win by Matteo Ceradelli at No. 2 singles. Ceradelli battled for a 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 that lasted two hours and 37 minutes.
YSU opens the month of April with a Thursday afternoon home non-league contest against Dayton. First serve is set for noon at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center.
