Indianapolis, Ind. – The Youngstown State men's tennis team picked up an impressive 7-0 win over IU Indy on Sunday at the West Indy Racquet Club.
The Penguins improved to 11-3 overall and 2-0 in Horizon League play. The Jaguars fall to 5-15 and 1-1. The win was YSU's first at IUI since April 2022.
After dropping the doubles point at NKU yesterday, the Guins had wins at No. 1 and No. 2 to win the point against the Jaguars. At No. 1, Matteo Ceradelli and Dominik Vonbank clinched the decision with a 7-5 win. At No. 2, Rafael Le Fur and Oscar Gippet cruised to a 6-1 win. IUI picked up a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, the Penguins won all six decisions with four matches coming in three sets. Earning straight-set wins were Oscar Gippet and Mihai Haita. At No. 4, Gippet earned a 7-6 (5), 6-2 win while Haita produced a 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6.
In three of the four three-set affairs, the Guins lost the first set and had to come from behind.
At No. 1, Maulouet returned to the lineup for a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win. He last played on Feb. 13. At No. 2, Vonbank came back for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory. Le Fur dropped his first set, 6-3, before winning the final two by 6-3, 6-2 scores. At No. 5, Malo Vernejoul dropped his first set 6-4, before winning the next two, 6-1, 6-4.
YSU makes the short trip to Cleveland on Friday to continue league play. First serve at the MMTP is set for 6 p.m.
