Akron, Ohio -- Youngstown State junior Anna Pompeo continued her strong start to the Cross Country season with a second-place finish on Thursday evening at the Tommy Evans Invitational in Akron. Nick Gliha led the men with an 11th-place finish.
Pompeo was just seven seconds behind winner Maria Moore of Akron (18:34) in the 5K run. YSU's second-best finisher was Brittany Stockmaster who was 14th with a time of 19:33. Other finishers for the Guins included Monica Ciarniello who was 23rd with a time of 19:52, Katey Heney was 24th at 20:03, Nelly Yegon placed 27th at 20:39, Ashley Smith had a time of 22:23, Jillian Smith posted a time of 22:24, Paige Eckman was 43rd at 23:11, Samantha Atwood had a time of 24:04 and Alexis Cooper clocked a 24:11.
Gliha finished with a time of 21:08 in the four-mile event. Kyle Joynes finished 20th with a time of 21:29, John Hutnyan was 27th clocking a time of 22:13, Ryan Pavlicko was 36th with a time of 23:20, Ryan Sowards placed 38th at 23:20 and Lance Ronghi was 40th at 24:15.
In the team race, YSU placed fifth with a score of 122. Malone won the event with 36 points, Kent State was second at 52, Akron was third at 56 and Marshall was fourth at 122.
The Penguins return to action on Sept. 28 at the Notre Dame Invitational.
