Winning the 5k race in a time of 18:40 at the Akron Quad on Thursday evening, junior Samantha Hamilton became the first runner in YSU cross country history to capture two individual titles to open the season. Sophomore Eric Rupe was also the Guins' top runner for the second consecutive meet, placing 15th in the four mile race with a time of 21:09.
Women's Results
Hamilton ran away from the rest of the competition, posting a time that was 12 seconds better than the runner-up and nearly 40 seconds better than the third-place finisher. She also won last week's race at Duquesne in 18:31. Coming in as the Guins' second runner and eleventh overall, Anna Pompeo finished the course in a time of 19:35. The trio of Nelly Yegon (20:06), Christina Oles (20:16) and Brittany Stockmaster (20:19) rounded out YSU's top five.
The women's squad improved their times and pack running from the previous week. There was only 44 seconds in between the second and fifth runners, and Coach Gorby hopes to get the gap to less than 30 seconds by the end of the season.
Men's Results
Freshman Nick Gliha and Austin Mclean were right behind Rupe as the Guins' number two and number three runners. Gliha finished in a time of 21:32, with Mclean crossing the line 16 seconds later. Brandon Pasvanis came in at 22:28, and Aron Korir completed the course in 23:28. Compared to last week's meet at Duquesne, this week the Guins' improved their individual times by nearly a minute.
Both cross country squads are back in action on Sept. 17 at the Penn State Invitational at State College, Pa.
