Tysons, Va. -- Georgetown jumped out to a 6-0 lead and went on to defeat the Youngstown State baseball team 7-2 on Saturday at Capital One Park.
The Hoyas scored the game's first run in the bottom of the second inning before posting five runs in the fourth to build a six-run advantage. The Penguins plated their first run in the top of the sixth before the Hoyas got the run back with a single tally in the eighth. YSU scored another single run in the top of the ninth to produce the final margin.
Georgetown evened the three-game non-conference series at a game apiece while improving to 14-10 overall. Youngstown State dropped to 3-16 overall after opening the series with a 3-2 victory on Friday afternoon.
Nathan Beckley and Alex Jang each recorded two hits while Brady Shannon doubled and scored a run for the Penguins offensively. James Carlson hit his first career triple and scored a run while Brevin Smith singled, walked and stole a base.
YSU starter Jack Messmore surrendered four runs on six hits with two strikeouts and two walks over three innings in a losing effort. Luke Zmolik was responsible for two runs on three hits with three punchouts over two innings of relief while Kale Wemer allowed one run on two hits with two strikeouts over a career-high three innings on the mound.
The Hoyas struck first with a single run on three hits in the bottom of the second inning. AJ Solomon hit a leadoff single and scored from third on an RBI single from Jeremy Sheffield.
Georgetown pushed its lead to 6-0 with five runs on four hits in the home half of the fourth inning. Solomon hit a leadoff single, Braxton Templin reached on an error and Travis Ilitch was hit by a pitch to load the bases with nobody out. After Zmolik replaced Messmore on the mound for YSU, Connor Peek greeted him with an RBI single to plate the inning's first run. Sheffield drove in the second run of the rally with an RBI groundout, Christian Hamilton brought Ilitch home with a bunt RBI single and Connor Price followed with a sacrifice fly to drive in Peek. Hamilton scored the final run of the frame on a two-out RBI double from Ashtin Gilio.
The Penguins got on the scoreboard for the first time with a single tally in the top of the sixth inning. Shannon hit a leadoff double to right center field and Beckley followed with an RBI single up the middle.
The Hoyas pushed their lead back to six runs by scoring once in the bottom of the eighth inning. Peek hit a two-out double and scored on an RBI single from Sheffield for Georgetown's final run of the contest.
YSU's second run was scored in the top of the ninth when Carlson hit a leadoff triple to center field and scored on Misael Uriepero's RBI groundout.
Georgetown starter Trajan Lee allowed one run on five hits with four strikeouts and three walks over five innings to earn the win. Jack Volo, Griffin O'Connor and Ethan Rucker each came in to work a scoreless inning of relief before Marshall Whitmer permitted one run in the ninth. The four Hoya relievers combined to limit YSU to one run on three hits over the final four frames.
Peek and Sheffield each notched three hits to combine for six of Georgetown's 11 hits in the game. Sheffield drove in a game-high three runs while Peek doubled twice and scored a pair of runs.
The Penguins and Hoyas will conclude their three-game series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch at Capital One Park is scheduled for 1 p.m.
