Tysons, Va. -- Georgetown scored four runs over its final three at bats to pull away for a 6-3 victory over the Youngstown State baseball team in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Capital One Park.
The Penguins jumped in front quickly when Nathan Beckley hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning. The Hoyas scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to grab a 2-1 lead before plating a pair of runs in the sixth to build a 4-1 advantage.
Alex Jang's solo blast in the top of the seventh kept YSU within striking distance, but Georgetown answered with two more runs in the eighth inning to gain a 6-2 lead. The Penguins posted a single tally in the top of the ninth when James Carlson singled and scored on a pinch-hit RBI single from Garrett Cutting.
Georgetown won for the second straight day to earn the series victory and improve to 15-10 overall while Youngstown State fell to 3-17 overall.
Beckley and Jang each hit solo home runs for the Penguins while Carlson singled, walked and scored a run.
YSU starter Mikey Rodriques did not allow a hit while fanning two batters and walking two over two scoreless innings in his fourth start of the season. Brandon Mikos allowed four runs on nine hits over four innings on the mound while Griffin Almond was responsible for two runs in two thirds of an inning.
The Hoyas evened the score at one run apiece in the bottom of the third when Connor Peek hit a one-out single and scored from third on Jeremy Sheffield's RBI single.
Georgetown took its first lead with another single run on two hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. AJ Solomon hit a leadoff single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Braxton Templin and scored on a two-out RBI single from Peek to give the Hoyas a 2-1 edge.
Georgetown pushed its advantage to 4-1 with a pair of runs on three hits in the home half of the sixth. Solomon hit a leadoff single, moved to second on another sacrifice bunt by Templin, advanced to third on a single from Travis Ilitch and scored on Peek's RBI groundout. Sheffield followed by bringing home Ilitch from second with a two-out RBI single to center field.
The Hoyas extended their lead to 6-2 with another two-run inning in the bottom of the seventh. Connor Price drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on Solomon's two-out RBI double to right center. After Jake Ferretti replaced Almond on the mound for the Penguins, Templin walked on four pitches and a balk during the next at bat put runners at second and third. Solomon raced home on a throwing error later in the frame to give Georgetown a four-run lead.
Georgetown starter Spencer Seid allowed one run on two hits with eight strikeouts and four walks over six innings to earn his fifth win of the season. Luke Jackman came in to record the final two outs in the ninth inning to collect his sixth save.
Solomon went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored to pace the Hoyas offensively while Peek and Sheffield each added two hits and two RBIs.
The Penguins are scheduled to begin a busy five-game week on Tuesday with a midweek non-conference contest at Eastern Michigan. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. at Oestrike Stadium in Ypsilanti, Mich.
