Youngstown, Ohio — Youngstown State's women's basketball team had three players reach double figures but fell 61-52 to IU Indy on Saturday inside Zidian Family Arena at Beeghly Center.
The Penguins dropped to 13-6 overall and 6-3 in Horizon League play, while the Jaguars improved to 7-11 and 3-6 against the conference.
Danielle Cameron scored all of Youngstown State's 16 second-quarter points when she buried five straight attempts from beyond the arc and added a free throw. She helped YSU trail just 26-25 at halftime, and IU Indy outscored the Penguins in both of the final quarters to come away with the road win.
Casey Santoro added 14 points and surpassed 300 career assists, and Sarah Baker scored 10 points.
Olivia Smith led four Jaguars reaching double figures with 16 points.
Youngstown State outshot IU Indy 40.9% to 40.4%, and it was plus-one in turnover margin despite committing 19 turnovers. IU Indy made one more 3-pointer, had small edges of 18-13 off turnovers and 11-8 on offensive rebounds, and converted all 11 of its free-throw attempts. YSU was an uncharacteristic 9-for-18 at the charity stripe, and IU Indy's slight advantages in those areas led to the victory.
Both teams showed their defensive strength early as IU Indy scored the game's first points two minutes into the game. YSU's first points came when Sophia Gregory jumped in front of a pass for a breakaway layup at the 6:26 mark. That ended up being her only points of the game as she battled foul trouble. Baker scored on YSU's next possession, and the Penguins led until Nevaeh Foster's 3-pointer with seven seconds left gave the Jaguars an 11-9 advantage.
Cameron had a quarter to remember in the second, making five straight attempts from beyond the arc from the 7:54 mark until 2:02 remained. Her third one came on Santoro's 300th career assist and tied the score at 18. The Penguins took a 25-24 lead when Cameron split two free throws with 44 seconds left, and Smith made two free throws with five seconds remaining to give the Jaguars a 26-25 advantage at the intermission.
Foster buried a 3-pointer 12 seconds into the second half to push the margin to four, but Youngstown State scored six straight points over the next four minutes to take a 31-29 lead. A Brooke Adkins triple with 5:39 on the clock gave the Penguins their largest lead of the second half at 34-31. From that point, YSU was held to one field goal over the next five minutes until Santoro hit a pullup on its final possession to make the score 42-40. Kamara Mills hit a 3 before the third-quarter buzzer to push the margin to 45-40, and the Jaguars took their first double-digit lead on a Foster bucket with 7:47 remaining in the fourth.
Santoro and Baker scored on YSU's next two possessions, and a missed layup that would have cut the margin to four turned into a three-point by IU Indy that gave the Jaguars a 53-44 lead. IU Indy extended its advantage to 59-44 with 2:57 on the clock, and YSU shaved six points off of that deficit for the final margin.
Youngstown State's next game will be at Robert Morris on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
