Youngstown, Ohio – Sara Felder scored a goal and recorded an assist to lead the Youngstown State women's soccer team to a 3-2 Horizon League opening win over Green Bay on Thursday evening at Farmers National Bank Field.
The Penguins improve to 2-7-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the Horizon League while the Phoenix fall to 2-6-1 on the year.
Kamryn Rosa and Emma Rigone also scored goals while Camille Bultel added an assist, and Maya Naimoli recorded seven saves in the win.
The Penguins struck first in the 23rd minute to take a 1-0 lead. Bultel sliced the Phoenix defense with a through ball at the and after a touch, Felder hammered a right-footer into the lower left corner for her second goal of the year.
Less than six minute later, Rosa launched a shot from 25 yards out and found the top left of the goal to give the Penguins a 2-0 lead at the 28:07 mark.
Naimoli stopped a Green Bay penalty kick in the lower right at the 28:18 mark to keep the Phoenix off the board.
Green Bay, however, cut the Penguins lead in half on a goal by Aixa Helbringer-Escobar at the 34:05 mark.
The Penguins turned defense into offense early in the second half to extend the lead back to two goals, 3-1, at the 52:01 mark. Rigone cleared a Phoenix center that led to a Felder breakaway. Felder ran more than half the field sprinting past her primary defender, forced a secondary defender to commit, and dished off a pass to Rigone just outside the six. Rigone beat the Phoenix goalkeeper in a one-on-one with a right-footer to the lower-left corner.
The Phoenix, who took a total of 29 shots, continued to battle and notched second goal in the 86th minute.
Youngstown State host Milwaukee on Sunday, Sept. 21. Kickoff is at 12 p.m. at Farmers National Bank Field.
